I guessed Ford Escort and was correct. Ugh. Lots of good stuff about the 80s, but Ford Escort was not one.

1983 - Cutlass Supreme - I had one. That car had a lot of memories and will always hold a special place in my heart.

The mid 90’s Mustang was one of the worst generations. That was a sad time for muscle cars in general.

Your Car & Driver website doesn't go far enough in the past for my graduation year, but I did find this Readers' Digest website which goes back to 1950. According to Readers' Digest the most "popular" car of 1959 (but not necessarily the best selling) was the
1959 Cadillac Coupe de Ville
One of the most iconic car designs in American history, the Cadillac Coupe de Ville debuted in 1959 with a 325 horsepower V8 engine and those big, beautiful tail fins with brake light missiles protruding from the distinctive rear of the vehicle.

All the girls had G body GM cars(Monte Carlo, Grand Prix, Cutlass, Regal).
Most guys had Chevrolet and Ford pickups with a few that had mustangs and Camaros.
