Salt Lake City - spotlessly clean, mountainous, and surprisingly little traffic

Honorable mentions:
1) San Diego - mountains, beaches, great weather year-round but expensive AF.
2) Louisville - underrated big "town". Hilly, green, low housing costs, and crime is isolated to the western side.
2) San Antonio - a little trashy but overall clean, safe, close to Hill Country, and affordable.

I agree with all of the cities on your list except Louisville. It felt a little run down and there were a ton of meth addicts there on my one visit.

NYC before 9/11 was pretty great.

Salt lake is spotless and full of nice people.

Tampa is nice, clean, lots of history and culture, has some bad areas but easy to avoid.

I will second SLC. Beautiful place and the Mormons are friendly people.

I have also been to Chicago and L.A. and would chose Chicago out of the two. The suburbs, especially DuPage and Kane County, are pretty nice.

Not Boise. It's a crime ridden shithole and everyone should stay far, far away.

Tampa/Orlando... but not that I think they are great.

I haven't been to ones mentioned. I have done LA but I am not ranking that anywhere. I use to travel to some New England cities but we took a company jet and literally were there a day at a time like 7am until 2-3 pm and might have gotten lunch a local place if it wasn't provided so you can't really form an opinion on a place when traveling like that. Most of my travel takes me to small towns and villages and I actively avoid the big city.

New York, San Fran and Seattle were my favorite/best until they were sabotaged.

They’ve fortunately relaxed a bit recently over there. My biggest customer is in SLC so I’m there every three months, and I really like it.

Not US, but … Vancouver. Gorgeous, clean, interesting.

Surprised it’s mostly Chinese and Japanese. Very friendly. But Canadian govt is anal.

Phoenix is terrible, but Scottsdale is the tits. If you’re visiting Phoenix, always stay in Scottsdale. That’s my favorite town west of the Rockies.

Like San Diego and Austin a lot. Chicago too as long as you don’t go astray.

Chicago is up there for me. I know that’s going to bring a hailstorm of downvotes on the OT, but the areas where a visitor would ever actually be around are great.

I was also pleasantly shocked by Indianapolis.
