Rhodesian Ridgeback. One is awesome, 2 or 3, amazing. A wolf pack almost.
We have two now and I have had at least one for over 30 years. I had 2 that were litter mates and watching them hunting squirrels in the backyard was mesmerizing. The dog would keep the squirrel's attention and the bitch would sneak up behind it. There are too many trees in our backyard for them to actually catch one but they would spend all day trying.
They have been dubbed the "Navy Seal of dogs" and although none of mine have ever written a book about their exploits it is an apt moniker. They are big, powerful, fast (they are used for coursing in some countries), near unlimited stamina, and all-around tough. With both sight and scent hounds in their DNA they are a true multi-purpose dog. Plus if you need something to bay a lion they are the obvious choice.
They are also very loving a protective but we had one that was too protective of my wife.

My blackmouth cur and I can have somewhat legitimate conversations, with her telling me what's going on or her showing that she understands what's going on with me emotionally.
I had a beagle -- fricking rattlesnake -- that was the happiest go-lucky dog ever. Was a joy to watch and listen to her chasing rabbits (why she was put on this earth).
Have a red heeler now, and he's the most loyal thing.

I never had a bad dog. In my lifetime, I’ve had Dachshund, Doberman, German Shepherd, Blue Heeler, and Labs. All were great, but if I had to pick, pound-for-pound, the all-around best was the Blue Heeler.

Do their personalities change based on color? I have heard the chocolate labs are more hyper and the black labs are more docile.

Our neighbor has the Blue Heeler. It is super aggressive. It will chase cars and we used to walk down the road with a stick and hold it up when she came running across the pasture. Not a fan.

Lab mix mutts for me.
We had a dog whose mother was a brown poodle. And the dog looked exactly like a half size Lab - I guarantee the father was mostly Lab. This was about 20 years before Labradoodle became popular. Awesome dog, if I get another dog it will be a Labradoodle, though they look very different from the dog we had.

My family never had dogs while I was growing up, so I was always a cat person—until this summer.
My college-age daughter (no pics) adopted a rescued year-old golden doodle. My daughter had to move to GA for a summer job with FOCUS, so we agreed to dog sit for a few months. Needless to say, I became a dog person almost immediately. He is just an awesome dog. He is obedient, lovable, and so very smart. The way he looks at us with those doodle eyes just melts us.
In fact, I fell so much in love with him that when I stumbled across a 1.5 year-old Aussie doodle being rehomed, I adopted her. I actually brought her home on our wedding anniversary, and she has been the best gift we gave ourselves. Like the golden doodle, she is obedient, loyal, and super smart. Her former owner was a college student who also had a full-time job, so she never got much attention before we adopted her. As a result, she follows us everywhere we go and gives us every bit of the love she has in her heart, which is a lot. She also gets along with the cat. Never again will I not have a dog in the house. Coming home to a sweet dog who is so happy to see me that she wags not just her tail but her whole body is an amazing feeling. She even smiles at us sometimes.
The doodles are truly the best dogs. Some people denigrate them as “overpriced mutts,” but a smart, obedient, loyal dog who does not shed makes for the perfect family pet. I think the fact that both of ours were rescued makes them even more lovable. They know how good they have it now.

English springer spaniel.
Easy to train, esp.house train
Love people, kids and other dogs
Fight like street fighters if threatened or attacked.
Love to be rubbed etc., very tactile
Lose their mind over squirrels and birds though!

My hunch it was never exercised or given a job and never really an active part of the family. You do those things with a heeler and they’re great family dogs. That dog just figured out aggression was the only way it could get any kind of attention.
That said, an out of control heeler would be a pain in the arse. Too much brain and energy in one place if it decides to be a terror.

Boxer. Great family dog & will protect the heard if necessary. But gentle lap dog if there is no danger.

Chocolate lab. Golden retrievers are great too.

American Bulldog. Never had to teach her much of anything. Housetraining, healing, sitting...pretty much everything came naturally to her. She went everywhere with me. You could leave a plate of food in front of her and she would not eat until you told her to. Also, was naturally protective of all kids.
I miss that dog.
Worst, by far...French Bulldog.

We have a black mouth cur. Smartest dog I've ever had. Loyal, protective, easily trained, sweet and smart. She doesn't leave my side.

I didn’t own her, but Hackberry Rod & Gun had a dachshund/lab mix named Mabel.
She looked like a lab but with short little legs.
They called her the “low water retriever.”
That was a sweet little dog.

I've heard this, and would like to meet one, just never been around a black mouth cur.
