What's currently the smartest way to buy a used car?

I want to replace the sedan I have with the closest possible vehicle that has awd. They make my car in awd but there aren't a ton on the market. It's a 2010 fusion.

Cars.com or autotrader.com and look for certified pre-owned.

Auto trader. Get a car from a name brand dealer. Drive the extra distance to save thousands. Get the lowest miles possible

go to library, and look in the april edition of consumer reports, then look at BEST BETS on used vehicles
BUT, that's if you don't mind what they reco, but they ARE reliable
a co-worker supposedly got a great deal on a pontiac, I looked it up, said they usually had tranny problems, and of course you know what happened to my co-workers great deal
it'll take afew minutes of your time, and will pay great dividends if you let it

What about CarGurus app. Lets you know if you slipped on ice or not.

I'll get slammed but look at getting a Dodge Charger awd in either the hemi(r/t) or v6(sxt). They stopped making the v6 in awd in then 15 model year so you'll need to look 11-14 if you're interested in the v6 awd model.
I use autotrader, car gurus, and cars.com apps when I'm looking for a vehicle. I usually extend my search to 500 miles from current location. I always look in Houston, Dallas, and Atlanta first as well. Handle everything through email of phone call. Find 2-4 that you like and pit each dealer against each other. Always negotiate out the door price. Don't go for any dealer add ons.

I like cars.com much better than autotrader because they don't differentiate between sponsored ads and non-sponsored ads. There's a 3 (or 4) level hierarchy to autotrader posts and it drives me crazy. Especially when searching for something relatively common.
The smartest way to buy a used car is to pick out exactly what you want using all the filters cars.com has (that you care about), then sorting by price. I do a 500 mile search radius because that incorporates Dallas & Houston into my searches. At the bare minimum you can use this as a negotiating tool when you find a vehicle locally. I knocked $4k off the price of a car instantly and painlessly by showing the salesman an identical one in Dallas. When you're asking for a better deal it helps to have some evidence of why you should get that deal - the cars.com app handled that for me. My dad's negotiation tactic was to offer half of the asking price no matter what and go from there... I'm probably more successful with an iphone.

It's a PITA to find a AWD anything down here unless you buy new.

Excellent advice, probably the best I've read on here.

Best resale value.
Toyota RAV4, if you must go wussy.
If not...
Toyota Tundra or Tacoma.
Cars.com or autotrader.com and look for certified pre-owned.
Ask any dealer mechanic, Toyota Tundras, Tacomas will outlast them all.

This. It gives you a good idea what is out there.

I don't trust dealer mechanics, they look for things that aren't covered by warranty.
But ask a good, trustworthy, long-in-business mechanic. They'll tell you the same things. Toyota trucks, Rangers, Toyota/Honda sedans are your best bets. They're not what the O.P. is seeking, but that's what my guy, GnK in Metairie told me, from the first time we went to him.

I would suggest using money.
Would not suggest using pork chop.
