What’s a good “starter pet” for a 7 year old?

Bought him a beta fish about 3 years ago (pretty sure this fish is immortal) and for the last 6 months or so he’s been responsible for feeding him twice a day. He wants a pet for his bday but I don’t know about anything other than dogs.
What’s a easy maintenance “exotic” pet? Hedgehog? Lizard? Guinea pig?

Just get a dog and make it a family pet. You can't expect a 7 year old to be responsible for another life.

Guinea pigs. But you have to get two, so the cage will be big and hard for a seven year old to clean.

You will laugh, but a gentle snake, like from the corn or garter family. They need to be fed once a week give or take, are super gentle if you handle them regularly, and have zero stink. Once you have their vivarium set up and light on a timer, they are super easy to keep.
