You know why I am uncomfortable with this thread? Because people who have no faith or spiritual investment in church should not be there. Just stay home. Church attendance is an act of free will. People should go because they believe and want to be there, not because they are shamed by family members or offered free food. People give to the church because they believe it is the right thing to do, not because they are shamed or forced.

And yes, I do believe that a person who goes to church one time for some random reason has the potential to have a conversion experience. But if it didn't happen to you in the first few visits, and if you would rather be somewhere else, you should probably stay home.

Btw, I loathe Easter and Christmas Catholics. Please do us all a favor and stay home.

Show me, in scripture, where a person without faith actually prayed for faith and received it.

What would it take to get you to stop going?

Predictable responses from atheists are so cute also.

your thoughts are received and respected. that being said, the down vote was not my doing to your reply haha. my original response was not to start an argument of agreement or disagreement. like you, I was just explaining my thoughts.

Personal experience. But the New Testament is full of these examples. Those who had a faith strong enough to just touch his robes were healed.

I go because I recognize the value in a religious community, not from external shame (lol im not a baptist), nor from personal belief. I think it is the 'right' thing to do, though not 'right' from a moral perspective.

I still go every now and then with family on the Holidays and such.

I know it's all nonsense now but church never bothered me, I have nothing but good memories of it. I have no objections to going with others.

Jesus said to leave the 99 to go find the one lost sheep though. What you describe sounds like you prefer to stay with the 99 and just hope the lost make it home.

That is possibly a conflict of interest, yes?

I often feel bad because I find myself mentally arguing with the preacher

and sometimes I get looks from the wife when I accidentally let out a "pfft" a little too loud...

A new boat would get me to go. I wouldn't even sleep.

I will need it for the lake of fire where I will spend all eternity.

You are an evangelical, aren't you? I am not.

Clearly you didn't read or comprehend my post. Being in church just for the sake of being in church is a lie. We find lost sheep in different ways, that's all. Don't think for a minute I am suggesting that people should not share their faith.

Members of the church not asking me any questions and trying to get to know me. I want church to be an elevator ride. Get in. Get out. Besides the brief acknowledgment of each other existence, no conversation is necessary.

It was a joke. The whole idea of the Eucharist transubstantiation is a joke. It is wafer cracker.

It doesn't bother me unless they start speaking authoritatively on matters which they have no business lecturing on, such as evolution. The number of pastors academically qualified to talk about most scientific matters in front of others is very, very small.

When it comes to matters of their religion, I can't fault them too much for being blinded by strong faith. Especially considering their entire life's purpose is wrapped up in the fantasy. If they come to the realization that their beliefs are not true, then the most they can say about their lives is they helped make people feel better with a lie. At worst, it was a wasted life.

That's a lot to face

I would go if they got rid of the part when you have to "stand up and greet" everybody around you. That shite is awkward AF. Hate it.

I do like a good sermon though, about the only part I like.

I'm not much of a believer but I enjoy going every now and then. It's still a good message and sometimes even makes me feel better. But I don't go to one of the "you're going to hell" churches anymore either.
