By my definition all Christians are evangelicals. To me, that word means to spread the gospel by any means necessary. Not sure if that is what the world means with that label or not though.

I understand what you're saying I think.... Why have someone just sitting there bored waiting to leave? I would respond by asking what the best way to find the lost was?

We all tell one another comfortable lies. There are certainly more empty lies than religious ones. Even if the more 'enlightened' among us can see the lie, I still think it is one to cling to tightly.

It's the one reason I have considered in any form going. There are good churches with good communities where you can meet decent well intentioned people. I just can't do it because I can't pretend to believe something that I don't. It would be a lie that I don't feel comfortable with.

A scientist such as yourself should be familiar with Pascal's wager.

Are you claiming that god came down and revealed himself to Salmon and then died?

Do you think Salmon is 2000 years old? Or do you not understand the words you are typing?

I don't know, the world just makes more sense since I realized it was all a fairy tale. I no longer have to grapple with so many difficult moral and existential questions. In the light of an objective lack of meaning and purpose to existence, everything makes more sense.

Propping up religious belief requires tiring mental gymnastics and a rejection of the world we see around us. It's just too much work, and frankly I don't fear death enough to send 80 years doing that work.

Most of my life consists of bullshitting people for various purposes, church takes no exception.

Stop singing things that are meant to be recited. It turns a prayer from 30 seconds to 6 minutes. All of those add up

Also the holding hands, this was never a thing when I was a kid. Now I get dirty looks bc I don't want to limply hold a stranger's hand.

ETA: No announcements about the bake sale that is coming up or the flyers handed in my face that I litter my car with because it would be disrespectful to throw on the ground.

I would say that the scary thing is how unempty the lie is. If were just a comforting story people told themselves in times of discomfort, that would be one thing.

Much like any other social organization, all one must do is say the right things. Belief is not a requirement, although it makes the acting more natural.

It feels empty to me. I find it impossible to truly believe what is said and taught, but that does not mean I reject it.

see...I play this game with my family. They don't know my real beliefs. I have yet to "come out" to them as I'm afraid of how they may react.

And it's growing really tiresome. I'm almost at the point of telling them.

But the "just say the right things and go along" approach gets old...quick.

I say this with love. You have a warped and distorted view of Christianity. I apologize on behalf of whoever the source of the misinformation was. You couldnt be more wrong.

All it takes it faith. That's it. Nothing more. Believe

I am, and it's a nonsensical emotional appeal. Why should I believe something someone made up just on the off chance it's true? Bevause this particular make believe story says I will go to Hell if I don't believe it?

Moreover, which religion do I wager on? If Islam is true, most non-Muslims go to hell. If Christianity is true, all non-Christians go to hell. If Buddhism or Judaism is true, there is no hell.

Finally, if God were real, he'd know if I was giving intellectual assent just to save my arse. True belief isn't a choice, and I can't close to believe in something I know isn't true.

sounds so simple, doesn't it?

but what if a person simply cannot believe?

I cannot force myself to believe something
