The railways have to want to try.

Also keep in mind that this is a big country. High speed train service is mostly going to be regional. Planes are going to be the default choice for 500+ mile jaunts.

Time machine back to the 1956 and get Eisenhower to pass the Interstate railway system instead of the highway system

It would have to get a hell of a lot cheaper. We were looking to take the Amtrak Acela train from NYC to Boston, traveling first class. Grand total round trip would have been over $1200. For that kind of money, they can kiss my arse, I'd rather walk.

Were you trying to buy the tickets the week of? I can usually get a decent deal on those tickets if you buy in advance. Don’t really need first class if taking Acela. All the seats are nice. Now the regional….you may want to up it to business class

Gov would hand out free vouchers to the people that pretended to be poor. Would turn into traveling ghettos within 3 years.

It's more than that. It's 8 hours from Memphis to NOLA.

It could be magically reduced in size, or all of the major cities could magically be picked up and put in California.

Like in Europe you can get anywhere under 2 hours max by train.

Chicago to NOLA? That's 8+ via Amtrak

How did America get so car Dependant?

it would take the free market demanding it. right now and in the past they havent.

maybe if we have ultra high speed rail service but in general americans prefer vehicles and air travel.

why do we need rail service for personal travel if there is not demand for it?

Because everyone should be crammed into large cities, the rural areas need to be depopulated, and people should be banned from owning cars.

You'll own nothing, and you'll like it.

Nope, about six weeks out, on a train that showed only 30% of capacity had been sold.

The trains running 300 mph in Europe probably aren't sharing the tracks with a trainload of pollution. The train in Louisiana will be messed up like the loop trying to use all existing rails. As the rail needs repair they just slow the train instead of fixing it.

This makes me think about driving on I-45 below Alexandria, where it feels like there's only three exits with rest rooms, before Carencro.
