re: What would it take for America to get better railway service?

Like in Europe you can get anywhere under 2 hours max by train.
Well, that's simply not true.
America has a lot more sprawl so trains aren't really a good fit. They would have been 30-40 years ago but the time has passed.
America would be wise to spend $500B on autonomous cars and ride sharing technology rather than pour that into fixed tracks. Sure, it's great that a train can get you from point A to point B but most people aren't just trying to go to train stations. They then need to catch a bus, or an uber to get to/from the train station.
Self-driving EVs could beat the pants off of rail in the next 20 years. How long will it take to build a good railway system?

Once I’m there, then how do I get around?

The only way for passenger railway to ever succeed is to get rid of Amtrack

Shrink the distances between population centers... fill up the empty spaces between population centers.
Do you really want to live in a world if you "own a home" you live on the first floor and have tenants upstairs and in the basement just to be able to afford "owning" a home? Even if it meant you got your 450mph train from New Orleans to Chicago is it worth it?

Chicago to NOLA? That's 8+ via Amtrak
How did America get so car Dependant?
Also, Chicago and NOLA are 927 miles apart. I doubt Amtrak can get you there in 8 hours and I doubt the European style system would do better than 8 hours either.
The fastest trains in Europe go 200mph. Even if you had zero stops and never slowed down for major bridges, urban areas, track junctions, crossings, etc that would still take 4.5+ hours.

We were looking to take the Amtrak Acela train from NYC to Boston, traveling first class.
Why are you taking first class on the Acela? The whole train is business class and perfectly fine.
It costs me around $140 R/T between NYC and DC. Spacious leather seats, cafe car, no airport/security, under 3 hours. Worth every penny and how travel should be.

This.
Theoretically, high speed rail could work in a few specific corridors but why would it make sense to spend billions to build out another infrastructure when we’ve already spent so much building out the highway and airport infrastructure. It would be a colossal waste of money

I don't desire to go to either place.

Paris to Madrid.
800 miles
12 hour drive
16 hour train ride
Once a day high speed train for $160
$40 2 hour flight.

You can't even get out of the country from Amsterdam in under 2 hours unless you are taking an express.

More like 18+ hours. But the hours will fly by playing cards and drinking booze in the club car.

Go back in time and put rail lines in along with the interstate when Eisenhower built it in the fifties.
Barring that, it would have to be a very slow and regional roll out, otherwise it would be prohibitively expensive. Probably take 50+ years to get anything resembling what Europe has.

Having taken a 20 hour train ride from New Orleans to D.C. and back again, I can tell you that you don’t want to be on a train that long.

Have you ever traveled by train in Europe? Paris to Zagreb is 100 miles less than Chicago to New Orleans and takes 17+ hours.

No you can't.

Because that's what we felt like doing. Business class was almost $600. Still too much. Our final decision is we will just drive to Boston. Less time, less expensive, which also includes parking garage costs for a week.
