Stores we would otherwise never hear of also use Amazon as a portal. There's nothing to find those stores and go directly to their sites.
Want something from England or France or Germany: Amazon is the way and it works brilliantly. The sites even tell you aka warn you if it's made in China.

I’m the only stateside person in my department, it’s how I call all of my coworkers/boss. It caused a major interruption and I had to approve some shite that came up last minute to get a deal through today that would have benefited from a phone call. Oh well. I’m sure we’ll have a backup plan tomorrow.

Are you talking about Amazon.com or AWS?
If AWS went down, the vast majority of major websites would be down. In fact, facebook.com was hosted using AWS (as of 2020).
But, just like like facebook went down while AWS stayed up, so too could amazon.com with AWS staying up.
So you have to define what you actually mean by amazon going down.
