In modern times I think you’d have to go with WW1 overall, but it’s sort of hard because every war has certain events where suffering was on a comparable level, just not quite as widespread.

Stalingrad was every bit as brutal, if not worse, than some aspects of trench warfare.

Fighting in the Frozen Chosin was awful too, even though the Korean War isn’t one that gets brought up much.

The conditions the British soldiers endured in the Crimean war were pretty awful.

But yeah, I have to agree with the others. I’d infinitely rather take my chances charging a machine gun than entering a medieval battlefield charge/melee. You’re going to die in both cases, but at least you have a better chance of it being instantaneous with the machine gun, rather than getting hacked to pieces or trampled in the mud.

And we now know that all those who were screaming witch hunt were woefully, tragically wrong. Communists were and are infiltrating our nation, obviously early on through Hollywood, then academia, and now have a controlling interest in one of the two political parties in this country. Irony? There’s plenty to go around.

The one in which you fought.

It did not take me long to know it was a lost cause, due to no support from Washington. Johnson and McNamara were complete idiots, they are responsible for the injuries and deaths of Thousands.

Three N. Vietnam Generals wrote they were amazed we did not bomb Hanoi in 1965

seemed like WW1 was the worst for conditions with piss poor healthcare and it seemed like the whole war never went more then a mile or two in any direction across body filled fields and trenches and then the gas attacks were horrendous trying to live through

The invading Danes vs the Celtic tribes of the northern islands off Scotland and east coast England. 200 years.

Stalingrad

It’s said that the average lifespan of a German soldier entering the battle was just 24 hours.

I’ll go with WW1 or the Civil War. Just brutal combat without modern medicine.

I’d say the civil war. Tactics and medicine were way behind the weapons and conditions. More soldiers died of diseases than combat. WW 1 is a close second. Trench warfare and chemical weapons had to be a total horror to experience.

Few battles can compare to the unrelenting hell of the WWI Battle of Passchendaele. You’ve got the hell of trench warfare and all that entails. And on top of that you can literally be drown in mud and disappear forever.

Probably some medieval war where everyone dies and those who don’t are captured and tortured in the most brutal way possible

Modern wars probably WWI

But y’all are forgetting battles like that of the Chosin Reservoir in Korea. Merely existing in -20 degree temps in the open are brutal enough. Try fighting with frozen fingers and inoperable weapons and retreating on frost-bitten feet. This also applies to the Eastern Front in WWII Russia and probably Valley Forge. The wounded had little chance of recovery and troops simply froze to death at their posts. A person can cope, though not easily, with excessive heat and rain but the human body simply cannot function in extreme cold. Add to that all the extremes of war.

I'll have to ask my Grandpa more about that next time I talk with him. Here he is on the North/South Korea border.

medieval war

With a few notable exceptions such as the Hundred Years War, Medieval wars tended to be short affairs usually decided in one or two decisive battles. And unless you were within a few miles of a battle, it probably didn’t affect you at all. Wars were more compact in that instead of a “front”, armies moved as a mass, usually no more than a few thousand men, and battles were fought on a single field.
