While sectors did. see heavy casualties, notably Omaha Beach. Operation Overlord didn’t really have as high a casualty rate as many feared would be seen.

Now if I had to pick the worst battle to fight on the Western Front during WWII, I’d have to say the Battle of Hurtgen Forest. That or the Battle of the Bulge due to the mindnumbinly cold weather.

There were some pretty big casualty numbers involved in Napoleon's retreat from Moscow and bitter cold to boot. It sounds to me like invading Russia was just not a good idea.

They entered Russia, the Grande Armee numbering over 500,000. When they got out, they left some 400, 000 behind.

The Thirty Years War was pretty brutal with lots of forced cannibalism.

Civil War - specifically, Vicksburg.

Having to charge up those cliffs in the heat of June/July in those heavy woolen uniforms with Confederate musketry and cannonballs raining down upon you. Not my idea of a good time.

Completely needless battle in the grand scheme of things. Along with Peleliu in the Pacific.

A battle or series of operations that never happened in the Pacific Theater in WW2 , the Invasion of Japan, Operation Downfall the two parts Coronet and Olympic. Estimated casualties of over One Million US and maybe 20 Million Japanese.

Between the threat of Soviet tanks rolling into Japan and US Nuclear weapons The Emperor ordered the surrender.

That would have never happened either way. The Soviets lacked the means to transport an army across the Sea of Japan and all of our shipping would be tied up supporting our own invasion.

And that was just the number of British troops killed. When you added in the wounded, the British suffered over 50,000 casualties on the first day of the Somme.

Could you imagine the public reaction here in the US wE suffered over 50,000 casualties in one day? The British did that in July 1916 and still fought on for over two more years.

Worst war by far for all involved was Civil War. Military tactics were still based on revolutionary war strategy. Soldiers were expected to form rank, stand and fire shots at each other. The problem with that is the weapons being used at a much longer range and were much more accurate (all things being considered) especially when the rifled barrel and lead mini ball came into play.

With a few notable exceptions such as the Hundred Years War, Medieval wars tended to be short affairs usually decided in one or two decisive battles. And unless you were within a few miles of a battle, it probably didn’t affect you at all. Wars were more compact in that instead of a “front”, armies moved as a mass, usually no more than a few thousand men, and battles were fought on a single field.

Agree, however the crusades were over a hundred years of brutality and murder from both sides. Thousands amongst thousands of Christians, Muslims and Jewish civilians were killed, along with countless soldiers from all over the known world. Those Knights who survived the first crusade were above all men in history for what they went through and accomplished. Once they left Constantinople, it was constant battle after battle and siege after siege until they finally took Jerusalem.

Its WWI by a mile. Because they didn’t evolve tactically from the civil war. The industrial revolution brought a far greater leap in technology between the civil war and WWI

The one in which you are personally involved.

Citing historical events and casualty logs do not do the horrors of any war justice. Movies, photos and documentaries cannot capture the “presentness” of war, only the history of It’s battles.

One never dies in the past or in the future. Death only comes in the present and to you alone.

I have seen the elephant.
