The post Marian uniforms and armor of the Roman Legions:
Before Marius's reforms, only landowners could be legionaries, they had to buy their own weapons and armor, and Rome's military was an disorganized mess.
Marius reformed the military and standardized everything. Additionally he opened up recruitment to all males which lead to a much larger force and created loyalty.
Most of the men under his lead would fight to death if need be. Before that, soldiers would often put their own desires above the empire and would cut and run if they felt a cause was doomed, or it would prevent them from returning to their farms. It also meant campaigning could be done year round instead taking place only when the Farming season was over.

Everyone else has covered the obvious here, but I'd like to throw out two unheralded uniforms:
One, the old Khakis that Army and USAF wore in the 60's and 70's. They sure as hell looked sharper and more military than the drab blue and forest green Class A bus driver unis they wore/wear. I always thought Khakis were my USAF dad's sharpest uniforms.
Also, instead of changing cammie patterns every few years, how about returning the tried and true OD Green fatigues? Easy maintenance, hides dirt well, and effective just about anywhere. The Israelis still largely use OD Green, or some variant of it. Hasn't hampered them in desert ops.

Battle axes and leather aprons (to keep your enemy's blood off your uniform) make quite an impact!

I remember reading a story about F. Scott Fitzgerald serving in WWI (the war ended before he shipped out). The story said that while the army did issue standard uniforms, many of the officers, including Fitzgerald, had their uniforms made. Fitzgerald had his designed and made by Brooks Brothers.
