Had just taken a severance and with it a few months of planned sabbatical between jobs.

So I was spending weeks at a time paddling Class V whitewater and trad climbing until recovering enough for a few more weeks and rinse and repeat.. . .and again.

It was a very good year.

19. Cooking at a Cajun restaurant for a chef from NOLA who fit the old chef stereotype perfectly. Drunk, loud, and a lot of fun. He was always throwing awesome parties and he let the entire kitchen drink for free at the bar after close every night (which I'm sure played a part in his going out of business the end of that year).

Just getting my ducks in a row to enlist which I did the end of that year.

I was in Austin working for a large heavy highway company as an estimator two years out of college. Me and my office mate would go out drinking every night and developed a network of bartenders that poured better and charged less. It was a glorious time.
I ended up getting transferred to Houston and hated it and quit 6 weeks later. Made the move to commercial construction.

I worked in downtown NOLA and hung out in a midcity bar almost every night.

Rented an apartment for $350/month.

No savings.

Well if today, 1998, I was a Jr. in high school. I think my girlfriend at the time broke up with me soon after Mardi Gras.

I was pissed, had a track meet a day or two later, ran mad and won. She was just what I needed!

No idea what my trajectory was at the time. Was doing pretty good in school, I suppose, and thought I wanted to major in engineering. I ended up not majoring in engineering.

I was a JR at LSU. Partying a lot, lived in Tigerland at the time. It's a hellscape now, but it wasn't bad in 1998.

Lafayette.

Working and waiting for my second son with my first wife.

Professionally, my trajectory was upward. Relationally my marriage was shitty. As Buffet once said, “On top of all that I got married to early/Cost me much more than a ring.” But I got my sons out of it, and I’d pay the price again 100 times for that.

I’m 1998 I was a couple of years into my engineering career and working towards paying off student loans. Living in Denver and life wasn’t too bad at all.

Now, after nearly 30-year career I have retired. I can definitively say that, though life wasn’t too bad pretty sweet at that time, life is better in retirement!

I was 15/16 in 1998

If I’m being honest, by the end of 1998 there was probably zero hope for me growing up to be a functional member of society.
