I had the opposite problem.

Growing up, I loved baseball, football, and basketball, but I was tiny for my grade. I was also quite young for my grade (started high school when I was 13 and college when I was 17), so that made it even worse.

I was 4'11" and about 90 lbs when I went to high school at a 1600-student, Catholic, all-male national athletics powerhouse where everyone only played one sport. I was a damn skilled baseball player and made the first-tier All Star teams in my Little League even as a 9 year old and then 11 year old (this was right before travel ball became a huge thing), and I could have definitely played at a top tier high school had I been a grade lower, but I was a tiny arse kid in a try out of 100 kids for 20 slots on the freshman team alone, so I was SoL. It's probably my biggest sports "what if".

Turned to golf and then never looked back after that. I was already getting to be pretty good and had to focus 100% to stay on my high school team and try to make enough noise to play D-1 in college.

In retrospect, though, my experience is that, even at 12 years old, you know who is going to at least have a shot to play pro and who will never have a prayer, and I never had a prayer, even in golf. I was a good high school player, played AJGA and all that, and probably would have been able to play lower level D-1 or small school had I wanted to go that route, but there was a 12 year old (who ended up playing for my high school as well) around the city who was already beating me and the rest of the good 16 - 18 year olds around the city and state (most of whom would end up playing top tier D-1 golf - FSU, Florida, Wake Forest, Ohio State, etc.) even when he was 6 years younger than the rest of us...

He is probably the best golfer in the world right now. You could see it even when he was 12 years old. No amount of willpower would have gotten me or any of my friends/teammates who were very good to that level no matter how badly they wanted it.

1. Finished my bowling league with trophy for highest average.
2. My baseball team lost the championship game.
3. Had an Atari 2600.

Probably true, brother. Ifs and buts and all that.

As I said, arguably the best golfer in the world right now is an alum. Our current football coach is an NFL HoFer and an alum. An Olympic swimming medalist and one of the best American runners in the world is an alum.

I think it's hard to describe, to be honest. We had guys who never played on the varsity basketball team end up playing D-1 (very unusual, to be honest) because they were so good in AAU. We had plenty of guys who never made the top 5 in golf who got D-1 scholarships. The level of competition that early drives a lot of kids out of the rat race at age 14 or 15 but end up being really good athletes.

You know Rockhurst, right? Imagine Rockhurst with a population 1.5 - 2.0X as large. That's what I am describing.
