18 year olds whose brains are not fully developed and who lack experience should not be given free rein to access booze and drive 4,000 lb vehicles on our highways.
But if they don't have access to booze, they can operate those vehicles?
You're full of shite!

I don’t think the drinking age law has been super effective over the years. Teens looking to get wasted will always find a way.
I had very few issues finding alcohol in my high school years, during the early 2000s. Didn't ever have a fake ID, just the nerve to walk up to a counter or into a bar and buy it.

Legal for places to sell to folks under 21 but illegal to consume under 21 or some shite like that.
I know I found out the hard way when I had to pour out a fresh case of the Beast I had just bought at Tiger Mart. That BRPD cop was laughing his arse off at me.

I was speaking in generalities, of course there are always exceptions.

My senior year in H.S., our student council thought it would be a good idea to have all students carry an ID. So I volunteered to head this motion. Made $5.00 a head on fake ID's. My brother, brother-in-law, cousin and myself go to Houston to watch a weekend baseball series against the Cardinals. Well, Friday night was nickel beer night, Lone Star beer. Well, my BIL buys the first round. Then my brother who was at LSU and over 21. Well I get up and say whose ready for another one. My BIL and brother look at me and laugh. Texas was already 21 at the time. I bet them both 5 bucks I'll be back with four beers. So I sashay up to the counter and order 4 beers. Lady ask for my ID and I whip out my Leesville H.S. issued student council ID. She looks at it, ask the other girl if it was legit, and she nodded yes. Come back to the seats and collect my bet. Used it all weekend at the Dome. This was in the mid 70's. Good times.

Murderers are not responsible people—there is no logic to your argument. Further, 18 year olds whose brains are not fully developed and who lack experience should not be given free rein to access booze and drive 4,000 lb vehicles on our highways. They lack judgment and often act out of impulse.
So what's your opinion of kids joining the military at 17?

Not really, there as nothing wrong with buying at 18 - see my post above. The "wrong" only came in consumption but it was legal to purchase and possess, just not consume.
That’s not true. It was illegal to buy for the under 21. I got a MIP leaving that little store in front of Tigerland buying a 12 pack of beer. They were hiding in the back of the parking lot and as soon as I got in the car they came drove over. I had a girl with an open daquairi in the car and we got in trouble for that too. I was 19.

The first time the drinking age changed was 1987, but pertained only to buying liquor…not drinking in bars.
My husband turned 18 in January 1986, and was able to buy/drink, etc. I turned 18 in October 1986, and could buy for two months…then I could only drink in bars. He was grandfathered in and never lost the privilege to buy or drink—I was not. So he was 19 and had no limitations whatsoever. I was 19 and could not go into a store and purchase until I was 21. It was ridiculous. The loophole was the ability to consume/drink in bars. That was what changed in the mid-90s
It was stupid, but…Louisiana.

Some bars would let you in at 18 (Murphys, Sports, etc.. ) and others would require you to be older. I think Fred's was 20. You couldn't buy beer at Circle K unless you were 21 but Tiger Mart would sell it at 18. None of it made all that much sense.

When K&B announced they were going out of business, I went and bought packs of pencils and matchbooks. Still have some of both!

St Charles parish in the 1960's , the age limit was 5 foot two inches. Tall enough to put your money on the counter, good enough!

Those purple K&B pencils were the best!

The law was definitely strange. I got arrested when I was 18 for underage drinking and also charged with contributing to a minor because my friend was 17.

much easier for us, drinking age was 18 then, voting age was 21

My wife and I were married and moved to Texas when she was not yet 21. We went out partying at a Texas bar and were astonished when they bounced us out for under age drinking. I was 23 but she was still 20.
We thought we were transported to prohibition or something. The bouncer told us the drinking age was 21 everywhere but La at the time. I called BS and was later corrected.
It was 1989. The issue quickly resolved itself when she turned 21.

Many liquor stores still wouldn't sell to 18 year olds, despite the loophole. Teens knew the places to hit, though, to get that sweet licka. If you lived in BR, you were hitting up the convenience store at S. Flannery and Old Hammond or the package liquor store on Florida Blvd around the Denham Springs bridge.
