Some people really glorify the shah.

But more realistically I think the shah was pretty bad, but was only about 1% as bad as the Islamic Republic.

They weren’t any better. They are the reason the Islamic republic came to be.

Think of the best times.

Then think of the worst times.

Do tell.

Oh, nevermind. Low hanging fruit is the shah needed to be brutal to suppress violent nationalism/Islamism in Iran, or some such. Carry on.

They both starved and killed their own people and did whatever it takes to stay in power. Both regimes are awful. Comparing which one is worse is kinda pointless imo when innocent people are being killed. They both suck.

Even then life was better for the average Iranian than, say, the average Russian or Cuban or Yugoslavian

it was an authoritarian government, as the Region has been and will be

there were FAR worse

The Shah led a repressive government with a secret police. That turned the media in the West against him.

Then the ayatollah and his violent followers took over, threatening everyone who wasn’t just like them, and only then did we realize the Shah’s secret police were “repressing” the ayatollah’s crazies.

So the Shah looks a lot better 47 years later.

But thanks to the US, things changed after 1979...We created an enemy.

Weren’t Muslims actually less repressive 1,000 years ago than they now are? In particular on women’s rights?

That started much earlier when the USA via Standard Oil (now Exxon Mobile Chevron etc) and the UK via British Petroleum Ignored the Persian Empire to recognize a bunch of Bedouin nomads for the oil concession around World War I. Since the Shah was the US and UK Puppet, we continued the environment for the extremist to take root. If you ever watch "Lawrence of Arabia" watch it in this context and it takes on a whole new meaning.

If you happened to be stationed at the Forth Smith airbase in the 1970's, that was the Shah's personal Air Force guys training there.
