Evil regimes rise to power by gaining the trust of the pissed off citizens of their nation.
If life was so great then the Islamic Republic doesn’t happen. They were able to rise and gain power bc the people in Iran were starving and could barely make a life for themselves. Hence tons flocked here. To act like life was great there then is retarded.

You see how Muslims are. Only and iron hand can rule over those mongrels. They do make some pretty women, though.

Weren’t Muslims actually less repressive 1,000 years ago than they now are?

In particular on women’s rights?
they've always treated women like shite

even the pre-Islamic Arabic culture wasn't exactly forward-thinking when it came to women, but rape was frowned upon
but now the rapist walks, and the victim stoned

quote:Yes, they were. I have a friend who grew up there until his family fled to Turkey when the Ayatollah took over.
They weren’t any better. They are the reason the Islamic republic came to be.
I also have a couple of friends who were there with their parents in the early to mid-seventies. It was a very open society, and secular then.
It was not perfect, the Shah was put in place by the the Brittish with help from America and could be ruthless, but it was far better than today.

I grew up thinking the Shah was a saint and had nightmares about the terrorists leading Iran and Iraq.
With age and decades of hindsight, the Shah was no less brutal than Saddam. He took his nation's wealth, killed anyone who threatened him (usually with covert US help), and put his own people in brutal prisons.
Our leaders were completely stupid. Should've never stuck our nose in Indochina, the middle east, or propped up Israel. Maybe we wouldn't have the current situation in Central American countries if we told Truman to STFU and kept our focus on the Monroe Doctrine. (We surely wouldn't be viewed as the enemy in the ME.)

That turned the media in the West against him.
It's laughable to use the "western media" as a credible barometer of anything, even in the 70s. That was post-Watergate and the media had already chosen sides. Unless you were an adult at the time and following politics and foreign affairs, sit this one out.
Yes, the Shah was an authoritarian but the average Iranian was MUCH better off and the entire civilized world wasn't worried about Iran sponsoring global terrorists.

So who really gives a crap how much worse one is than the other?
Ask those that lived through both. That's who cares.

Due to being the crossroads for East/West trades in antiquity. Turkish, Israeli, and Persian women can be off the charts hot.
Erdogan has sent Turkey into a serious backslide, which I don't think most of the people want. But, when you use Apaches on civilians attempting a coup on your own soil, you tend to generate people that want to bomb the airport, etc.
Arabs require a firm hand. It's just the way it is. Dubai, for instance, works, because of the external enforcement mechanism (deportation, jailing, fines, etc. Yes, I know most of the people in the UAE aren't Arab, but the enforcement mechanism is) Japan and Korea work because of intrinsic enforcement. Same result, different motivation.

My dad made me sit through that in 70mm. I was maybe 8. Stuff like this is why I'm damaged.

To be fair, that was pretty global
Women were chattel like cows and sheep globally.
To marry them off, fathers had to post a dowry.
Women in the USA did not get the vote till around World War I

But more realistically I think the shah was pretty bad, but was only about 1% as bad as the Islamic Republic.
Could you please show your math on this?

If you saw it in the theatre its was glorious, on TV they hacked the editing and it was crap.
The Turkish Empire was the last incarnation of the Persian Empire that went on for about 3,000 years. Zorastorism was one of the largest religions on earth for some time. The Empire and the Faith were all wiped out by the desire for Oil.
Most wars are fought publicly over religion or freedom but in the end all wars are about power, wealth, and resources.

Start with how many Americans were killed, tortured, or kidnapped and held hostage prior to 1979 versus the time period since.

tUS has always been viewed by foreign visitors as a matriarchal society, w/rights for women gradually evolving from basic rights for all
