I’m sure many posters here, like me, have no recollection of air travel prior to TSA and 9/11. What was it like? Did you just essentially walk onto an airplane? Was there any security?

Pretty much. And family members/friends could wait at the gate for you to arrive or say goodbye at the gate.

Easy as hell. Metal detectors is about all. You could also walk into a terminal without having a ticket and meet friends and family coming off planes.

Airports had their own security

Anyone could go to the gate without a ticket

Friends and family could meet you at the gate, you didn't have to arrive 2 hours early... it was vastly easier than it is today.

You could go to an airport and just go from gate to gate if you so desired. Not sure why you would, but you could if you wanted to.

Went through security to board. I remember my backpack full of toys getting inspected (as a kid!) because it looked weird in the metal detector.

Being able to greet people right at the gate was the main difference.

Pocket knives under certain size were allowed. That may have stopped before but not much before. Walking to the gate to meet my wife at gate sounds strange now.

Luggage wasn’t even screened before being loaded at most airports.

Much easier.

Take Southwest. Basically in Texas we could treat it as if we were taking the Chicago subway. Buy your ticket walk to the gate, walk on. Get there earlier, take any available flight.

People seemed to behave better because the security stuff felt as if it were there to stop the bad guys (shoe bomber) and not to frisk Granny or your five year old son.

In college in the late 90's I flew to Vegas with (2) 5ths of Goose in my carry on and opened it/drank from it mid flight.

You could walk around anywhere in the airport to meet your family as they got off the airplane. It was much more relaxed.

You could not simply walk into the jetways, that has remained the same.

Not really any more dangerous than now. The TSA is worthless

Much more lax and laid back. Arrive 20 minutes ahead of time and basically just walk straight to the gate

You could stab a guy for annoying you. I once took out a Chinese guy with a Bowie knife on an Eastern Airlines flight for eyeing my Sony Walkman .
