What's really crazy is when there were smoking sections on planes.

Friends and family could meet you at the gate, you didn't have to arrive 2 hours early... it was vastly easier than it is today.

For the most part, this is correct. However, during Operation Desert Storm in 1991, the airports had heightened security and for a few months and only passengers could go to the gate.

Going to the gate to wait for or say goodbye to friends/family was great. To be able to hit up the restaurants/shops and stuff in the terminal made going to the airport so much better. It's miserable to go anywhere near one now.

Use to love watching the planes come in and out of Tyson McGee in Knoxville at the gates with the big windows when my dad flew in and out of town a lot.

I mean we used to have smoking sections in restaurants in recent memory.

Some still have them.

Delta used to let people on board the aircraft to say goodbye to whoever was traveling prior to 9/11

I remember reading somewhere how the smoking ban on planes actually made plane repairs more challenging because of how the smoke would permeate EVERYWHERE turning everything yellowish, such that they it was much easier able to pinpoint leaks and other issues outside the cabin.

Is that true or myth?

Had to bring many magazines or books to read because there were no cell phones that could play movies or tv shows.

Some planes had magazine racks with outdated magazines at the front of the cabin. Or you could look at the Skymall magazine if you REALLY got bored.

no, Delta would keep it open while taxiing out, closed for the flight, everyone else closed it at gate departure

It helped crash investigators determine that Japan Airlines Flight 123 crashed as a result from a faulty repair after a tailstrike.

I remember planes barely ever being over half full.

Not everyone had a carry on because bags flew free so boarding and disembarking was very fast. Now it seems like it takes forever to board and disembark a plane.

No one ever picked you up in a car outside the airport at baggage claim. They always parked the car and went inside to meet you at the gate.

One of the survivors on Delta flight 191 survived because he changed seats to be in the smoking section which was at the rear of the plane. One of the few cases where someone extended their lifespan from smoking.

I remember smoke stained cabins in old DC-9s and BAe 146's. The plastic paneling was yellowish orange.

Any blade up to 3" or so was g2g.

Families at the gate. A metal detector wand when you boarded, and carry-on toothpaste, contact solution, etc, was g2g.

There were other differences, not related to 9-11.

Your ticket was bought from a travel agent and mailed to you. Not sure what happened if you lost your ticket, but I bet it was a pain.

No charge for a checked bag.

In-flight meals. They were pretty bad.

Sky Mall magazine.

A phone in the head rest in front of you. Swipe your credit card and make a call.

The biggest question is “How was protocol the few weeks after 911.

I remember that my local airport had an airport cop at the entrance to the parking tower who made you open your trunk to peak in it, and then searched under your vehicle with a mirror on a stick. Did that to every vehicle as it entered. That didn't last too long.
