I've only been to a handful of colleges, but its hard to beat Athens for a college town. Good academics, solid athletics, beautiful girls, and the campus is as close as you can get to downtown. By far the most fun I've ever had on an away trip and I don't know if any other trip will ever compare.

If Colorado was good a football it might be up there. I think Boulder may be a little to "crunchy" for me but the setting is beautiful.

true college town not in the middle of nowhere, decent states with strong economies, alum support, elite academics and athletics, hot girls, no extreme weather. only two schools meet the qualifications imo: uga and unc

Nah. I don't know if you've ever been to Berkeley, but it runs more left than any place in America. If you sliced my arm, blue blood would pour out. I'm as liberal as they come. Berkeley still gives me pause.

It's completely f*cking insane. I went for a week to visit a friend back in the '90's. It just happened to be during the city's political campaign season.

UT Austin is pretty freaking hard to beat
Big arse campus right in the middle of one of the best cities in the country, walking distance from downtown, 50,000 students so you have a little of everything, very liberal, hot women everywhere, very diverse
great food, bars, it has a cool drag

I've never been a fan of the city of Austin or the people there. College Station also sucks, but Waco sucks even more, even though it is improving rapidly.
Honestly the two college town I've had the best times at in Texas are Lubbock and Stephenville (Tarleton State) and I've visited them all within the last five years.
Baton Rouge is also a great time, obviously.
ETA: I've also only been to most of the big 12 campuses and LSU.

Have been to all 3 you mentioned (two with my kid who was looking at colleges) and ND is head and shoulders ahead of SMU & TCU. SMU's campus was nice but it's in a concete jungle and TCU's was unimpressive. ND in late fall is beautiful.
