What are the characteristics of "best college experience?"
For me:
Co-Ed with 60/40 split in the direction that puts the odds in your favor
Academics strong enough to be recruited nationally
Most apartments/housing within walking distance from class and stumbling distance from bars
School has good relationship with town
Sports programs strong enough to usually garner national attention
Hyper-liberalism kept at a minimum
Strong bar scene
Maybe Michigan/Ohio St? Illinois covered most of those points ok except for needing a few more bars on Green St. and a Football team that doesn't go on hilariously long losing streaks in a bad conference.

Can't speak for going to college in Austin but going to Austin every few weekends to stay with friends was my favorite part of living in Houston

Don't be such a pussy about votes. I think most people would agree they enjoyed their college experience and had a great time at their university, but to think you can get an equal experience in most college towns as you would at Ohio St, USC, Texas, ect. you're crazy.
Plus by thinking Oxford is God's gift to man and getting butt hurt over down votes, you're playing right into the Ole Miss stereotype.

Ivy League is the most hardcore and traditional college experience, I would imagine.
Stanford is up there, as well. A lot of it has to do with having a high percentage of students who are both serious about college and live on campus.
Most large state universities that are old and are in small towns are probably all in the same tier. A lot of the SEC schools are good in that regard.
If I could do it all over again and go for the "college experience" I think I would go to UC-Davis.

I'm not "butt hurt" over down votes, I just enjoy these types of discussions. Instead of down voting why would people not prefer that person offer their opinions on the matter? I could give a shite if you agree with me but this is a message board, we are all here for quality back and forth banter.

Oxford is far from gods gift to man and you will never see me say anything close to that. It's the only college experience I had, and I enjoyed it. I don't see why this is such a difficult concept. Why would I respond to this thread with a college that I have no "college experience" at?

It's a shame the media loves to shite on Ole Miss because Oxford really is a Tier 1 college town.

I'm actually shocked UGA hasn't even gotten one mention this far into the thread. It's in one of the coolest college towns in the country, outstanding academics, and a great athletic program.
Now I wouldn't put it above Michigan, USC, Stanford, and most of the Ivy Leagues, but it might be the best experience in the South

My druthers: Academics, walkable shopping/restaurant/ bar area, students that stay around on weekends even if there is no football game, intangibles such as picturesque campus and town....

SMU would shoot up the list if it had a relevant football program, but I think a great athletic department is a very essential aspect of the experience. the SMU kids I know cheer for other schools simply because the football program is a mess (For now at least; I like Chad Morris a lot.).
