What type of condolence remark is this?

At my company there is 3 people in my department that work together as a team. One of my coworkers seems to lack all social awareness at times. The 3rd member of the team came in this morning and told us that his best friend died of a heart attack over the weekend. I give the normal response of I am sorry let me know if I can help in anyway and the other guy goes "Well that's disappointing. I am sorry". This just struck me as odd and I just stared at him, as I have never heard someone console another person with the remark "Well that's disappointing". Am I crazy or is this just a terrible response?

I bet your co-worker got all of his vaccines.

You are overthinking this.

Your co-worker is likely on the spectrum, but they have learned to parrot certain responses to fit in better. Think of it like they are speaking a second language and frick up the homophones every once in a while.

Sounds like the guy said something that actually makes sense, rather than just a knee jerk sort of meaningless platitude like you offered.

It’s probably not ideal but it’s not that bad

Are you suggesting it was appointing?

Your co-worker's job isn't to console others.
These days, it is best to steer clear of personal issues in the workplace.

Its not what I would say, but I think tone would matter in that situation more than the words he said, but its nothing to concern yourself with. He made an accurate statement "that's disappointing" then said he was sorry. At leas the didn't say something like "well, people die every day. So where are we on this project?".

probably disappointing because it’ll be chalked up as a covid death.
