Growing up we called my mom's mother Grandma. Her father Dad. Because that's what she and all her sisters and brother called him.
We called our father by his name for the first few years of talking because that's what Mom called him. It switched to daddy until our teens to distinguish between him and Dad.
On my father's side: his father was PawPaw. His mother was Georgie. Because that's what PawPaw called her.
It was her middle name. We called her that because she hated her first name: Lilly.
My dad is called Doc by his grandkids because he's a doctor. He wanted to be called Papa Doc till I informed him that wasn't the best namesake to take.
But really, let the kids decide. They'll pick up what they want and your parents, as adults, should roll with it. What they call them will always be associated with that person, and that's the only important thing.
ETA: When my cousins who were military brats and lived away came to visit, they were living in England at the time and called my granddad "Grandfather" repeatedly.
He finally told them, "My name's Dad, dammit!"

ladygoodman, I’m surprised that you didn’t call one of your grandmas Penny Lane.

When did it become popular to buck tradition and make up your own name?
My parents did this same crap. It’s so ridiculous that I can’t even type the names my kids call them because it would easily identify them through a google search.
My friend’s parents also went with unique names.
Has to be some kind of resistance against aging and accepting that they’re old people now.

My Dad’s parents were Grandmommie and PawPaw. My mom’s were Nana and Papa Joe. My nephew just calls my mom what everyone calls her, and calls my dad Big Daddy. He picked it.
