As soon as that $1200 came out I knew the election was decided. I mean i knew before that when I saw the field. But when I looked online and saw the same people who normally hated him praising him, I knew he'd win.
A lot of people voted for W for reelection just because of the cash refund he sent everyone in 2001.
This was more and everyone got it this time.

i wonder the ratio of those arguing that Trump sent out checks to buy votes to the people who are currently unemployed.

i bet it's up there. ...

If anything, it shows how poorly paid the majority of America is. I recently saw an article in Forbes that stated that "low income" is anyone that is paid less than 847 a week. I tend to agree-- housing and other costs of living are going up faster than wages are.

If you go out in Baton Rouge today, you will notice traffic is nearly back to normal. Why? People have money, some for the first time in their working lives. It is a shame.

This. This needs to happen, this virus has made wage disparity very, very obvious.

On a related note, I can tell you that some employers are doing very shady things. Know of a situation wherein employer has not necessarily laid off some employees but neither has employer allowed said employee(s) to come in and work. Employer got a bit angry with someone who sought to take advantage of the federal relief available because, per employer, "it was going to screw up their efforts to get a grant". Read into that what you will.

Off the top it reeks of serious problems, perhaps even outright fraud. I suspect much of this is going on.

I am a small biz owner, I am still waiting for my loan. It's a dang shame that many companies were receiving loans and doing shady things to get them. I'll be lucky if I am able to stay afloat over the next few months.

At our plant we called back a couple dozen. The first 20 turned it down. What I was told they were reported to the employment office and were told they will continue to pay them and will investigate and if they can't prove they did not turn down returning to work the will start process to recover money paid, but not tell after whatever the date for the program ends.

Republican senater Ben Sasse offered this amendment to the stimulus bill:
quote:

Purpose: To ensure that additional unemployment benefits do not result in an individual receiving unemployment compensation that is more than the amount of wages the individual was earning prior to becoming unemployed.

48 Rs voted yes
2 Rs voted no
46 Ds voted no

The amendment failed. Even when the republicans have a majority they still cave to democrats.

Really sad that we have a bunch of weak non essential betas sitting at home collecting trump bucks drinking soy milk and playing animal crossing on the Nintendo switch while us essential heroes are out here turning wrenches and running beads and can’t catch a damn break!

So someone in Louisiana can get up to $247 weekly from Louisiana unemployment, then they can get $600 weekly from the federal government. Throw in the $1200 stimulus check. So in one month, my $13.50/hr employee just pulled in $4,588.

And you expect me, as a small business owner, to be able to compete with that?

If employers prove that their job is back open and they refuse that $600 goes away.

I agree. But some low wage earners probably just got $1200 + $500 per kid, $850/wk for 3 months, plus whatever other earned income credit, child tax credit, wic, la purchase card, tax credit housing, etc..

It's out of hand.

Also, if these companies paid a living wage, people would be more willing to go back to work. But nooopppeeee, we let employers pay $7.25/hr, even less to servers, and then are SHOCKED and APPALLED that people wouldn't willingly go back to earn those shite wages when the government is literally paying them more to sit on their asses.
You really really need to read up on how wages are determined in competitive market economies.

I think you vastly overestimate how much money companies that employ low wage workers make.

Go ask a small restaurant owner if he can afford the kind of wage increases you want.

The issue I've seen a lot recently is employers paying these employees for their time off as they get this federal money, to keep the employees.

Employees getting pissed because it's less than they're getting from UI right now.

And don't offer them part time work, that will piss them off even more.
