quote:Oh I agree. I'm making the comparison that the top of the line Lexus vs top of the line Toyota is similar to a limited edition Toyota vs the base model of same model. (maybe not quite that drastic but you get the gist).
It's a little bit more than the best Toyota package is equal to the Lexus.

Just guessing. Both use the same frame, etc, but the higher end models come with better finishings and service. For example, Lexus will treat you awesome when it comes time for a service. You make an appointment, and they take care of everything else.
What kind of shitty dealership do you go to? I've never had to turn a wrench when I get my oil changed at Toyota

I thought you meant top of the line Toyota was equal to base Lexus. I won't lie it's close and you might actually get a random bell an whistle in the Toyota. But it's usually something useless like Navigation (who needs nav nowadays, coming from someone who has it).
Someone made the statement in a truck thread recently that todays trucks are basically luxury vehicles because they have the technology that luxury cars had 5-10 years ago. I think that's a dumb statement since it proves they are years behind actual luxury, but it accurately describes what makes Luxury vehicles what they are. They are a generation ahead. Little things....like my auto AC in the Lexus is damn near as good as the thermostat in my house, whereas our well equipped Tahoe was a was a freezer or a heater even though in "had the technology".

Will your dealership come pick up your car at your work and drop off a loaner vehicle (that isn't a ford flex or something ridiculous, it's literally the same car you drive)? Do they have food and drinks out for you when you come in? I'm not saying it's the decision maker, but I have been blown away by Lexus and Infiniti dealerships where I'm at.

No....close though. It's the cousin of the 4Runner. The GX is based on the Landcruiser PRADO which isn't sold in the US.

Not much in my opinion. Standard technology is pretty amazing in vehicles these days. Even the cheapest new cars aren't tin cans like they were 30 years ago.
If you're on the road a lot I would guess there's some benefit to a smooth ride, heated seats and leather. I had that in my last car and it didn't do much for me.

Using Lexus as an example, most Lexuses(Lexii?) are unique from Toyota, platform and drivetrain-wise. Best example I can think of of a Lexus that's "just a nice Toyota" is the ES sedan, since yes, in plain English, a 2017 ES350 is just a fancy 2017 V6 Camry, but the differences are significant if you actually sit in both and drive both.
The Lexus has more standard features, i.e. an ES350 with zero options is equipped almost identically to a fully loaded Camry V6 XLE
Far more sound insulation everywhere, plus thicker glass all around
Suspension tuned purely for luxury and comfort
90% different interior with nicer better-fitting materials everywhere
Cadillac vs Chevy is much the same, but both are lower quality to a Lexus/Toyota.

What makes a Cadillac or Lexus better than a Chevy or Toyota?
Marketing. Same structure underneath, just the marketing and gizmos.

Avalon actually. It started out as a Camry derivative, but moved up to the Avalon with the generation before current.

i own an audi and a volvo, and previously a benz, and there is a stark difference in service between even a mid-tier company like volvo, and the german luxury brands.

This is a major perk. No toyota dealerships are doing this. The luxury brands tend to over deliver on service appointments. The fact that I can show up pick up a loaner and go about my day is a nice perk.
