re: What makes a Cadillac or Lexus better than a Chevy or Toyota?

Yeah, the LS =/= Avalon. The LS is Lexus's attempt at a BMW 7 series or something similar size. The ES and the Avalon are the same model size(at least in the last few generations). I don't feel like my ES is overly luxurious, although it's certainly a step above. The LS felt like I was in a luxury car.

Someone I believe to have done more research than I care to once told me that he once, too, believed them to be mechanically the same, but he had recently found out that Lexus has a slightly tighter quality control on even the mechanical components? than Toyota. I never checked him on it, and it's splitting hairs if true. But I figured I'd throw a "jumping off point" out there.

I have no idea what metrics are used, but the only brand that beats Toyota in reliability is Lexus. It could just be the people making the list throwing it a few extra points due to predetermined notions, but that's how they list them.

Here's your apples to apples if it makes you feel better
Toyota Avalon
ES300

Toyota Avalon
ES300

Better quality materials, nicer interiors, better performing engine and suspension. Just look at the difference on interior quality between the Highlander and the RX.

That's the exact interior I have in my ES. That steering wheel is nice. I like the look of it much better than the Avalon. But that Avalon has a charging station for your phone that I really wish the ES would have incorporated. There are certainly still things in the Toyota models that compete for convenience/etc.. If I could make a custom car, I'd incorporate some things from the "Toyota version".

Yep! Too bad the GX doesn't get Toyota's excellent turbo Diesel sold pretty much everywhere except the States. The v8 is really good but thirsty. I wouldn't mind having the TD.

How do you like your ES? I'm very interested in buying a nice CPO one to replace my 4Runner for work. I've driven one as a courtesy car when my Wife's SUV was getting an oil change but was curious about the mpg/what it's like as a daily driver.

I don't have the proper terminology for it, but when I look around my Lexus LS I see the sturdiest door hinges I've ever seen in a car. There are multiples touches of higher quality like that. The seams between panels are put together better. The moving parts are thicker. There aren't any rattles. The interior is extremely quiet.

There is no Chevrolet equivalent to the Cadillac CT6, CTS, ATS, etc.
There is no Toyota equivalent to the Lexus GS, LS, or IS.
This is very different from Acura, Buick, and Lincoln. Everything they make is based off of a lower priced mainstream model (except the Acura NSX).

I've been in the Cadillac XTS and I can't think of a Chevy that comes even remotely close to what the Cadillac offers.

Cadillac to launch autonomous Super Cruise feature in 2017
Looking forward to trying that out.

This is true, I know Lexus uses more of the sound dampening filler behind the panels than Toyota.
The one outlier and one that pisses me off is that the 4Runner Limited has better leather than the mid-level GX. I want to get a GX for the wife, but the interior is outdated and you have to get the top of the line GX to get the same leather as my 4Runner.

You might as well compare a Chevy Impala to a Cadillac CTS-V

same engine and drive train,right?
Wrong... one is a Front wheel drive 6Cylinder and the other is a RWD/AWD V8 that competes against the BMW 7Series/S-Class/A8
