That stupid. It's free money. Check and see if your 401k has a self-direct subaccount option. Basically it opens a window for you to buy whatever you want within the subaccount that is part of your 401k.

Yeah if you aren’t putting in at least what gets the match from your employer, you are leaving free money on the table.

If your employer matches 100% of your deposits or even 50% you aren't going to beat that consistently anywhere. You start out with 50-100% gains. Now I understand not putting more than the match.
If you can afford it, try to put in the max.
IMO the max is too damn low.

I’m down 13%. I just keep pumping money into it.

Unless you plan on retiring in the next five years there is no point to checking your 401k balance.

Down 8.1% since 1/1/22 on my total investment in 401(k) accounts.
Thought it would have been worse.

My net purchases over the course of the year is less than my the total loss for the year. And I've actually amped up my contributions since Feb 22.
That's how bad this year has been.

0.0% I went to cash position in my main account at the beginning of the pandemic.
I’ve missed some up, avoided more loss.

I'm up 25% from this time last year, for 2022 I'm still up 17%. Over the last couple of months I began moving out of other stocks to go heavy into energy (oil, gas, uranium and an energy transportation company). That's kept my head above water.
I've kept some in cash and been hoarding profits. The market is going to tank over the next couple of months (back in May I made a bet with my step-father of the Dow being at 24k by the end of the year), I plan on snatching up fricktons of deals then.
