I go by my middle name. I’m a Jr so parents called me middle name because of course dad went by first name.

My dad goes by his middle name.

It's so lawyers can go by them. For some reason it seems like none of them use their first name, just the initial.

It’s not required but it allows for people to insert a name that they hold dear in reverence to another person- Maybe a family member who was particularly relevant or a friend that the parents wants to show respect to

hearing your first and middle name meant Mama is about to bust another wooden spoon on your arse.

I wish I had inconsequential shite like this to keep me up at night instead of real life adult things to think about.

My kid has a middle name because I wanted a backup in case the first name turned out to be no good.

So pretentious University Presidents can initialize their first name and attach to their middle name.
F. King
Without middle name, that’s just pretentiously silly.

Does the military still assign you NMI (no middle initial) if you don't have one?

it used to help differentiate people when names were very common to the point a group of 40 people might have 10 share the same first names.
thats about as far as it mattered AFAIK
middle names were most common to use the names of christian saints as well.
some groups like latinos had 4 or 5 names in between first and last names to the point it was just getting ridiculous

Not when I was in (2009-2017). It was always Hispanic guys that would have no middle name and their last name would be Perez-orozco-valdez-guitteirez

A girl I went to school with made her kid's middle name be "Danger". It's a girl too btw.
I'm sure her kid is gonna love that when she's an adult

Often the middle name is a Saint's name.
In families where Saints aren't a part of religion, the middle name is often a family name.
These, of course, applied to children who weren't the recipients of made up names, of jumbles of letters of people known to the baby momma, or of "look at me" types.

Another guy has the exact same first and last name as I do - grew up an hour away from me and is about the same age. We have similar careers and I often get mistaken for him - the middle name is the only thing that saves me - oh he also did time in prison.
My Dad and Grandfather shared the same first name and lived in the same small town. Everyone called my Father by his middle name.
