What is the point of a middle name?

I rarely hear anyone using their middle names for any reason at all. Growing up, the only time I ever heard mine was when my dad got really mad at me and used in with my first name.

So you can use them for serial killers

I answer to my middle name at work and with family because I don’t like my first name

It’s for when moms yell at their kids. You hear your full name yelled, you know shits about to go down.

Sounds like you just answered your own question.

My parents decided they were going to name me one thing but then call me by middle name. Has been the biggest pain in the arse my entire life.
Don’t do this to your kids. That’s all I got

I know some twins with the same exact first and last name. So..the middle is what helps identify.

I go by middle name, have my whole life. My dad and I share a first name, but my mom wanted me to be named my middle name so that's what I go by.

My guess would be in some past time, even just utilizing the first letter of the middle name, having 26 John Smiths to choose from when looking for one in particular, was helpful. It's still helpful now, though we have many more ways of distinguishing who's who.

I go by my middle name. It's a fricking hassle sometimes when dealing with governments and medical stuff.

I work with data containing thousands of people's names who live in a small geographic area, and middle names are sometimes the only way I know which person in the system I need. There's way more duplicate first name + last name combinations than you'd think. Especially in Hispanic or Asian communities.

Oddly enough they don't use them for traitors.
Robert Hanssen instead of Robert Philip Hanssen
Aldrich Ames instead of Aldrich Hazen Ames

I don't use mine anymore. Last became my middle after taking my wife's last name.

Is that the one that makes sausage from ground-up dogs, cats, goldfish, and ponies?
