Got a friend who’s kid has been into kart racing since he was 6 and is now 16 getting into real car racing now.

They are wealthy, but it’s very expensive even for them. Almost constant travel, and they have to tow the trailer with the kart/cars plus they have a mechanic that travels with them.

Endangered animal hunting.

Just bribing the Rwandan authorities runs six figures per year. But having a freezer full rhino horn does have upsides.

Most you have spent on your kid doing a sport.
Martial arts training and competitions are like travel ball, but more individual as an activity.
Had great long term benefits, but was pretty pricey.

Obviously the kids don’t start at Formuka 1, but they are racing early in go carts, midgets, all sorts of open wheel type stuff.

Anything that requires a vehicle is expensive.

Karting

I’m about to see how expensive golf is. My youngest is starting to compete this summer.

Shouldn’t be too bad except for initial investment in clubs. He outgrew his beginners and has been using my wife’s. I just pulled the trigger on some Ping G430 irons. I’m glad he preferred them over the G440s. Got a decent deal with cut senior shafts.

His next set will be new fitted clubs.

Equestrian

One that hasn't been mentioned is cycling. Bike is 10-15 grand, kit is a couple of thousand, and tools are expensive if you do your own work. Add another grand for a indoor trainer, then the monthly fees. Bike rack for the car, plus all the travel and coaching. It is also likely a teen that is good will have several bikes.

Depends on location when it comes to hockey. Upper Midwest where the rinks are community based is much different than down south, out west, or cities like Chicago or St. Louis. Places where rinks are privately owned are expensive. Places where the rinks are community owned by city parks & rec it is much more affordable.

I pay about as much for my daughter to play club volleyball as I do for my son to play travel hockey. We play our travel games in the Dakotas, Minnesota, and Iowa, so regional travel. Volleyball is regional in the same area.

My kid raced motocross, I was up to $15k per year not including the cost of bikes. I posted here a while back about a family I know that was spending $100k per year for their kids racing and training.

Every sport can get as expensive as you're willing to go.

As the husband of an equestrian rider, any other answer is flat out wrong.

Think of all the money you spend on your kid and the sport. Lessons, uniforms, . coaches etc. Now, add on the expense of the horse. First, the actual cost of the horse, the good one’s aren’t cheap. Then you’ve got the expenses of the farrier, vet, trainer, feed, god forbid boarding if you don’t have a farm. The tack??? Lordy, the expense of a good saddle (esp English) can eclipse the price of a baseball glove. Oh and boots, those can get $$$$

That is correct. Horses start in the low 70s. And that’s just the start.

I don't know if Dad tracked all the money he spent on my junior golf then trying to get on Tour but it was a large number. I do remember when he was dieing he told me it was the best money he ever spent.

I’m noticing the church/faith based sports programs are very cost effective, just don’t getting a big head and sucked into travel

Motorsports can get right up there. I say that as an owner of 4 horses and 1 racecar.
