Not sure of the proper name, but we called them marsh flies. They're a lot smaller than horse flies, but way more persistent.

if they have wide black stripes on the wings it's a deerfly.

For me, hands down, the mosquito. I can be at an outdoor function with 20 people in attendance and I'm the one getting eaten up by mosquitos.

We seem to accumulate those yellow electrified rackets. Pretty fun until my boys start hitting each other with them.

And why is the answer a horsefly?

Meh, a horsefly is big so its easier to swat that fricker. And where I live you only see a couple horseflys here and there, they don't occur in large numbers.

So my vote goes to the yellow fly and the stable fly. Both of these can occur in large numbers and still hurt like a mofo.

In south Florida it's no-see-ums. I quite literally haven't seen a mosquito in 4 years and I'm not exaggerating. There's just a hundred other things that will bite you and they're usually worse than mosquitoes.

I thought about those sand flies that will light you up at the beach, because they are awful, but I don’t usually encounter them, even when at the beach.

Have to agree with chiggers.... nothing ruins a fishing outing like chiggers.

When I'm fishing at Chandeleur on a calm day and the blood sucking flies find me, where the hell were they getting a mammal meal yesterday?

Maybe mice or rats but some of those sand spits don't have any vegetation on them and no place for mammals to hide.

Gnats would have driven me slap mad back in the day had I been shipwrecked and couldn't build a smoke.

I swear I was about to say deer fly or horse fly. Those mfers pack a punch, almost like a freaking wasp. They ate me alive during a walk in the woods last week.

But I also remember when I lived in Ocean Springs being regularly attacked by swarms of sand gnats and they were fricking terrible too. You couldn’t even go outside for a few weeks

No-see-ums aka biting midges
Had never really encountered these until going to a wedding in Mexico in March.

Everyone at the reception got chewed up and the bites lingered and were itchy for 3+ weeks.

Mosquitoes are the most annoying for me, since they’re ever present during the summer in my area, but those little frickers were real bad. I’m glad I don’t have to deal with them on the regular.

Aphids. They find their way to potted plants so I get to directed summer fighting them. Next up, mosquitos.

When I go up to north Louisiana, it's redbugs or chiggers. One of those bites turned into a really bad infection a couple of years ago that I thought was going to do me in.

Red bugs are up there too but rarely encounter them outside of woods but those little bastards burrow under your skin and itch like crazy
