Where do you get idea that youth football doesn’t travel? Even in Japan they traveled. Florida, travel. Birmingham travel.

They are all very cheap if you only do rec or school and don’t care about quality

Football is likely the cheapest because you can have a legit D1 stud where you never really have to play outside of school

Golf, tennis, soccer, baseball is going to cost you a shite ton if you have a competitive child

Have you seen the price of running shoes? My son goes through 5-6 pairs of running shoes a year.

That's extreme. Not that I don't believe it but thats definitely not a norm.

Even if he was only getting 250 miles out of shoes, that's still an average of 25/week which is alot for most HS XC / track runners. Additionally, alot of XC running SHOULD be on soft surfaces which which should extend the life.

Most kids should be getting 400ish miles ouf of a pair of running shoes / trainers so if they buy two per year that's about $300-$350 per year.

Distance spikes aren't too expensive.

Watches can be found cheap and if they want a GPS watch, that's more of a one time investment.

As far as necessities, a cheap watch, non cotton socks, lined shorts for boys, a sports bra for girls and a good pair of running shoes is all they need.

It isn't free but compared to other youth and high school sports, it's definitely on the cheaper end if not the cheapest.

I’d say soccer early on, then cross country and track if they can run. Two of my kids did it. Shoes can get a little pricey, but everything considered it’s hard to beat- and one got a scholarship to UGA out of it, which helped me a ton.

It's not the sport so much as what league, etc., you choose to put the kid in.

My daughter could be doing ballroom for $250 a month. So of course my ex wife has her enrolled in a studio that costs $20k a year (with additional private lessons required, etc. as a part of that cost.)

My son's lacrosse team was under $1k a season, and all tournaments were in Texas. Two of his friends transferred to a different team that costs $5k a season and all tournaments except one per season are out of state.

All about choices.

YMCA sponsored sports. Cheap and the competition is awful but the kids may luck out on a good coach and learn something.

Tennis has got to be one of the cheapest sports to play.

If your kid wants to play high level it's one of the most expensive of all sports.

We have raised 6 and have had them play football, soccer, football, cheer, gymnastics, baseball, softball, dance, wrestling, tennis, track, cross country and band. They all did camps, tournaments, competitions during the season and off season. The most expensive is dance with cheer a close second with least expensive was probably track & cross country and wrestling a close second.

too much expensive equipment, and requires too many players. All you need for soccer is a ball.

He runs 35-40 miles/week. That is mostly road runs. Those running shoes are so lightweight they don't last.

Not sure why, but he goes through a pair every 2-2.5 months. Usually forms a hole in the top of his big toe. I always frick with him and tell him to cut his damn toenails.

Stop with the lettuce hair, bender sunglasses, and overspending and just let kids be kids.

Seeing some of these middle schoolers walking around, I just assumed the obnoxious hair and bender sunglasses was part of kids being kids Now on the other hand the overspending is the parents trying to buy that D1 scholarship while the kid gets burnt out on the sport as it turns from fun into a daily chore.

You already know the answer to that. Not a dime of the thousands I pay a month in child support is going into a 529.
