Teash 'em to play poker, by the time they are old enough to have a few $$$, they can make a pretty good living playing professionally...

Have you seen the price of running shoes? My son goes through 5-6 pairs of running shoes a year.

Almsoy any rec league would fall in this, unless the parent feels the need to get ridiculous with the equipment.

The playground by us charges $4 for registration fees and $20 for the shirt for any sport my kids are eligible for, so far. They are still young, so I do not know if the fees go up as they get older.
Baseball/softball: All we have ever had to buy was a glove. Can always use someone else's bat (we did buy a cheap one at academy), cleats are not required (we splurged and spent the $20)
Soccer/Volleyball/track/flag football/basketball: just show up in play clothes

spending $1400 a yr on shoes is the least of the worries in a majority of sports. Baseball, my son needs metals, molded, and turfs constantly in his shoe rotation alone. if you are talking about the expense of equipment of the sport, then its easily one of the cheaper sports to play.

Gotta be football since there are not any (for the most part) travel teams.

Football requires more equipment (pads, helmet, cleats, gloves, etc) than most other sports. That's just to be able to play and before any cost for leagues. Are the league fees cheap? I have no idea.

Soccer and basketball are probably the cheapest since you only need footwear for basketball and also shin guards for soccer. You don't have to play on travel teams. Local leagues are pretty reasonable.

Same with baseball. As much money as suburban idiots spend on travel ball, there’s a kid in Mexico who’s never touched a bat and is better than your kid. Cream always rises to the top. Stop with the lettuce hair, bender sunglasses, and overspending and just let kids be kids.
