The correct answer to the question is there aren't any cheap child sports. It has all become big business. I can tell you from having a daughter play travel soccer most of her youth, it's really expensive.

If it hasn't been mentioned already: swimming. Buy a tech suit & a couple pair of goggles once every 2-3 years, and that's it.
Swim is a GREAT sport. Keeps the kid in great shape, everyone cheers for each other, everyone gets along well including the other schools or league teams. Zero thuggery. My son started his Freshman year after doing soccer & basketball. I wish I would have started him in swim much earlier.

Cheapest child support is above the Arctic Circle because all they eat there is blubber and urine fish. Both are plentiful and cheap up there.

Swimming isn't terrible. They do have $500 swim suits ("tech suits") but they they aren't required, especially for younger kids.

Feets and shoes. Done.
Even more so, Cross Country. Same thing - feets and shoes- but it's done anywhere from 15- 30 minutes. With Track & Field, you have to wait around all day in a stadium, probably making multiple stops by the snack bar.

Cheapest sport my son played was Rugby. It was free, had to pay motels room once when we went to Houston.

I am convinced that competitive dance/cheer for girls is just about the biggest racket going in the youth sports game.
Someone mentioned $30k/yr a few pages back...WTF.

Girl Sport: Probably volleyball. Travel volleyball can run about $5k for elite teams but there's a number of local clubs that keep costs below $3k
Boys sport: Lacrosse? Golf? who frickin knows...

They're all fairly cheap if you just play local and don't travel. The travel sports is where the money gets nuts.

They compete at golf. What an odd, idiotic thing to say.
