I can tell you one not to get, a beagle,

Most fun loving, least aggressive dogs ever, but my god they are stubborn and mischievous...they will play hide and seek with your stuff all day every day, and eat anything and everything (rivalling a lab with that). Their noises are hilarious though, first dog I've ever had where I didn't mind the bark/howl/bay

Our 2 dogs are mutts from the pound. We took our kids to the pound and let them play with several dogs, and let them pick the ones they wanted, with just a little input from us. Both dogs were just under a year old.

We let our kids be responsible for both, and showed them how to train them to be responsible pets.

Hard to beat a dog that was saved from getting put down at the pound and connecting with a child that chose them as their pet.

They're both mild tempered over-grown lap dogs who sleep with the kids at night. I have no doubt they'd protect both kids to the death if they had to.

Had a Golden that was an adult when the kids came along. Fantastic dog with children. Before our kids were born, the neighborhood kids would come over and ask if she could come out to play. Our kids used her as a pillow, pull-up bar, horsey, you name it. So sweet and tolerant. She shed, but the hair made tumbleweeds and wasn’t a huge issue.

Next dog they had was a pug. He never knew he was a dog. Loved hanging out with the boys. Great dog, but Lordy did he snore. Like being at a hunting camp.

Herding dogs. Absolutely not for wee tykes. And be aware of how much energy they have, be prepared to help them burn it off. Probably be great for older kids that like to be outside. Super smart.

Some breeds just aren’t with us for long, factor that in to your thinking. Bulldogs and Great Danes come to mind. Depends on how soon you want to explain the inevitability of death to your kids. And depending on their age, they may want a backyard burial.

I’ve always found poodles to be spiteful, shredding things when they don’t get their way.

Best advice in here is go to the shelter. If your kids are old enough to assist choosing, involve them. As someone said, they know they are getting a second chance, and you’ll never get a more loyal, loving dog. We just took in our third rescue as a foster to help CAA out prior to Ida, and he is such a great dog. No chance he’s going back. Looks like he’s got some lab or setter, maybe a little Shepard in him. Docile and friendly as could be, but another good deep bark in the chorus when someone comes to the door.

Maltese. They don't shed and they're especially good for kids with allergies.

We have a golden mix we got when he was 5 and he had issues from prior shitty owners. Not aggressive just scared of everything and could be jumpy.

He’s now 14 and has a 7 month old around. First kid he’s ever lived with. He was pretty out of sorts at first, but they are best pals. Our dog spends 10x the amount of time with us in the same room when my son is in there than when it’s just us. When we put my son on the floor, the dog comes and lays 2 feet away. When we bring the baby downstairs in the morning and they see each other for the first time each day both light up - highlight of my morning.

This is absolutely the best way to find your kids a dog. You're good parents. Did it the right way plus you saved two dogs in the process.

Looking to get the kids a dog and was wondering what everyone thought was the best breed to be around young children.
Standard Poodle or any related hybrid.

Brilliant, loving, protective yet docile.

Don’t shed for beans either.

I will say I'm hesitant about German Shepherds around kids. I think that is more to do with my brother's dog than the breed in general. The dog is not well socialized and is overly protective. My family won't have the baby and the dog around at the same time when the baby comes over. They think the Shepherd may go after someone.

Disagree with the bolded part. We have had a Blue Heeler since our kids were very young and we couldn’t have had a better dog for them. You are right about the other descriptions but the kids loved hiking, running. biking, etc with her. She was always with one of them at night and so loyal and friendly. The best dog we have ever had. She is 14 and slowed down a ton but still a good girl and gets lots of love. Our youngest (15) takes very good care of her.

My Catahoula loves children but HATES when they run through the house. He will nip their hips like he's herding livestock. He also doesn't like when I climb a ladder.
He's pretty much our safety guy.

Agree on the GSPs, if you have active kids and enough land their intelligence and drive will more than match the energy of the most playful kids.

Agreed. I have two big dogs, neither of them give a shite what my kids do to them.

Small dogs are little shits and WILL snap at your kids.

I have owned a Newfie and a Great Pyrenees. Both were amazing gentle giants and great with kids, incredibly loyal and protective when needed.

That being said, the shedding was absolutely brutal, especially with the Newfie, but she was the best dog I have ever owned.

Perhaps a Newfie Poo mix would be ideal to control the shedding..

The Newfoundland Dog is truly an amazing dog.. spend a day with one and you will immediately understand.

I have a dachshund and he’s gotten grouchy af in his old age. And has always hated little boys for some unknown reason. I think it depends on the individual dog’s personality.

Easily a golden retriever. A lab is also a great dog for kids.
