I would have a 2.97 this semester with the old grading scale, but have a 2.6 with the +-. I finally get an A but its only worth 3.7 pts.

But above all of that, it sucks the most come finals time and you have to get a good of a grade as possible to keep your gpa from dropping.

students are more likely to receive the grade they deserve and you can tell an elite A student from a marginal A student, or a strong B student from a marginal B student.

I think most private and public schools outside of the Ivy ones should demand 100% transparency from the Ivy schools first. When you talk grade inflation and such, you start with the Ivy institutions, they have been the worst culprits because they know their 'honors' graduate will get the benefit of the doubt over some other university's 'highest honors' student by employers.

Until the Ivies are 100% transparent, every other university should go out of its way to send the absolute best product to the job market and maximize each student's potential to get hired (not implement systems like LSU has). Otherwise, their grads are going to continue to get squeezed out of hirings.

It is a more accurate assessment of your performance. /thread

I went to a school with the +- system and it emphasized the importance of making an A- rather than a B+. 3.67 versus a 3.3 was a big impact on someone's grade.

Would have really helped my GPA out. I was the king of 79s and 89s in college.

Did they end up putting in an A+? A grade above 4? Only makes sense if they're going to punish you for a 91, they better give you extra for a 99 in a class. Hurts A average students. I know my GPA would go down. I frequently mailed in finals where I had a guaranteed A in order to focus extra on tougher classes

Recalculate it with the old scale. I'm a senior and that's what I'm going to do, and use that GPA. I dont see the new system as valid since most students were against it. It wouldn't have been that hard to have a vote like they do for student government.

My college did not have A+. It leads to grade inflation. People graduating with over a 4.0 on a 4.0 scale does not look good for the institution, IMO.

Students should not be able to vote on grading scales. Baylor has used this scale for a while. My kid was not happy with her 3.87 her first semester; it was all A's. At least the med school recognizes the scale is different than other places and converts the GPA for applicants when reviewing them.

I think my GPA would have been pretty close to what I finished with anyway. I had a bunch of 88-89s and a bunch of 80-81s.

Glad I didn't have to deal with it though. I was definitely in the "40 for the final, keep the B club"

A+ is 4 pts, you don't get more than 4; An A-is only like 3.75 on the scale I've seen. Same with B's and C's

So instead of students grovelling for an A or B when they are a point away...they can grovel for a B-, B, B+, A-, A, A+

Students are not responsible for the development of an accredited curriculum. How a student is graded is just an extension of policy on the curriculum.

Only reason im glad im in the Tiger Bridge Program for a year because of +/-. I'll most likely have either a 4.0 or a 3.8 after this semester at BRCC and would'nt have that at LSU cause they're all mid to lower end A's.
