If you want to see anxiety rates drop to where they were 50 years ago, we would have to have about 30 attacks like 9/11 that kill a half a million Americans from the east to the west coast or a complete economic collapse that puts unemployment at 35% for a decade or more.

Maybe all kids need is even more school shootings to lower their anxiety levels

Well you bring up another good question. Why are there so many school shootings now?

Gen X (my generation) grew up not thinking the world might end in a few generations, but could possibly end on any given day at any given moment. So I’m not buying the “world might end soon” excuse being responsible for the spike in anxiety with young people.

Anyone consider that the existential despair that these looming end-of-the-world outside of our control scenarios cause for the individual are directly contributing to many of the problems we see in the 20th and 21st centuries?

If you subconsciously believe that the entire world is going to end in one or two generations, then you have no reason to consider the long-term repercussions of your current choices. This leads to making selfish future generation-screwing choices like amassing debt, disregarding making changes to dysfunctional systems, etc; as the problem will be resolved when the world ends.

In days of past, the most existential despair would have come from things like famine or invasion, but even with those subconsciously, our forebearers would have thought the world would continue so planning was necessary for future peoples. Now, we live in selfish times perpetuated by those who create, perpetuate and then profit from our existential despair.

This thread is way too long.

Social media and 24-hour BREAKING NEWS!! have made everyone angry, anxious, depressed or all of the above. Same for adults.

Way overrated. Most younger people don't think that far ahead.

I think people are bored, restless, stuck in a cycle of safety and security and lacking adventure, which we are all wired to have. Throw in a lack of coping skills and you'll find an anxiety crisis.

Is the world really that stressful now?
No.

Life is easier than ever and people have so few worries that they now stress out over inconsequential bullshite.

When you worry about where you will get food and water and whether you can support your children, you don’t have time to sweat the bullshite.

The first video I linked to on risk society deals with end of life things outside your control coincidentally.

I had a lot more anxiety when I was younger and poorer. Now I maybe "worry" about some less consequential stuff, but I'm not more anxious by any means

Research shows that wealthy countries have higher rates of GAD than poorer countries.

Why is that? Is it harder to live in the USA than China?

Anecdotal evidence that is counter to research.

That doesn’t mean that there are no cases in poorer countries though, just that it is less prevalent.

Shouldn’t it be the opposite?

Speckled Trout & Yellowfin Tuna have all but almost disappeared off the coast of Louisiana and kids aren't catching them like similiar kids were 10 years ago.

Probably because there are more factors at play than just wealth

Why don't you send me all of your money? It will make you less anxious, right?

I just asked my kids this same question to get their perspective.

Each one said it's because young kids need to smoke more weed.

Of course there are more factors at play, but why is it that it correlates with ease of living and wealth?

Hell, these used to be the problems of the wealthy only.

As ease of living increases, it seems that these problems increase.

Scruffy doesn’t have anxiety issues.

Also, why is it that you can’t seem to understand the concept of “prevalence”?

That does not mean that it affects 100% of people, just that it is more prevalent within a group of individuals.

This situation is counter to what people believe, even the researchers for the WHO.

Shouldn’t economic or political instability increase the anxiety of those in poorer countries?

You would think so, but it isn’t the case.

1. Our media and social media are constantly telling them that they're miserable, going to die, going to ruin their lives, or that their lives are already ruined every second of every day.

2. Our schools insulate them from the consequences of failure to such a degree that they rarely experience it until they're practically adults. Since they don't learn to deal with failure at a young age when the consequences are minimal, they are completely unprepared to deal with real consequences.

3. They've been drugged with ADD/ADHD medication and processed foods for so long that their brain chemistry is fried.

4. Our hyper-sensative PC lynch mob culture has made every single decision like walking on eggshells for these kids. Literally every decision from what you buy at the grocery store to how you say high to that guy you see every day at work that you don't really know could be spread on social media in such a way that it paints you as a terrible person, resulting in the loss of your job, getting kicked out of school, losing your friends, your SO, etc.

5. they have massive amounts of debt while working jobs that just don't pay very much, meaning they're always living paycheck to paycheck and constantly behind the 8 ball.

Basically, everyone is wound super tight because they never learned to deal with favor and they're indoctrinated to believe that every misstep, no matter how slight, will be the end of their lives.
