I’d also be interested to know what caused his anxiety problem as well. Like what was the root issue that started it all.
Probably my failing "marriage" combined with some childhood baggage.

eta: Though that came up after the anxiety started so who knows. Like I said there was never really a trigger that I could identify.

Genes and how they interact with the environment. This, in turn, fricks around with your brain chemistry.

As he said, there's often no trigger. You can be chilling on the couch and suddenly BAM, your heart is up to 150 BPM, your chest feels like it's being crushed, you can barely breathe and the room is spinning. A rational person would think heart attack. But it's rather surreal when the ER doc comes to you and says "No heart attack, it's anxiety."

The brain is a fascinating organ.

I understand what you’re saying. What I’m interested in knowing though is why this appears to be an increasing issue.

Parents letting their children have cell phones and full access to social media and literally anything on the internet.

90% of their life consists of being on social media.

Now, now, Paige, you're getting emotional.

As someone who NEVER gets emotional or calls people names, I think I'll take this time to say get help.

My parents used to say.... you don’t like it. Fix it. Or, you got 2 min to be upset and move on. Caring about others feelings isn’t a bad thing, but the amount of change coming from it is definitely over the top and gone way way to far. It’s led to being offended, and if someone doesn’t think like you it’s hate.

I’ve said it before that due to social media the world is exponentially bigger than it was when I was a teen... and it’s all at their fingertips... making them them feel even less significant.

As a teen in the 90s, I thought the outside world was just outside of my school district... somewhere where I couldn’t generally ride to on my bike.

Recently dated a girl who had wealthy parents. I didn't find out until later in the relationship her and her brother had anxiety about everything -- flying, driving, you name it. They were both waited on hand and foot and given everything they need (and still to this day).

They never had to struggle or learn how to achieve/earn on their own. Now they are adults and can barely function in certain situations.

Its what happens when everyone is just a bunch of pussies. Worried about what other people say and who they dont like and what kind of gender they want to be.

lack of coping skills, problem solving ability. They're afraid of everything and have to have a safety net.

They don’t really have anxiety. They’ve just been conditioned by society to believe hardship or adversity is some sort of medical condition. It’s not their fault. It’s the previous generations fault.

Pretty much.

Pain & adversity are life’s greatest teachers......Society now medicates through life struggles instead of teaching perseverance through everyday adversities.

Weak minded.

Instead of teaching kids to work harder and teaching kids to solve their own problems they teach them to blame others.

In the real world life not full of safe spaces.

Social media is a huge deal. Basically kids and young adults self-imposing 24/7 social pressure on themselves. Bad: they feel like they're under a microscope always. Worse: they only see the good/successful moments of their peers' lives in their feed in comparison to both the good and bad of their own experiences and have trouble looking at that through the appropriate filter. The feeling that their life experience is somehow inferior to others, even if artificially, is problematic for some.

Obviously, some deal with it better than others.

Maybe us millennials would be less anxious if you boomers hadn’t ruined the world for us
