How can it be so pretty and be so arse backwards?
I drove through it and it had some of the prettiest scenery I've seen. Then I would stop and get gas or eat and it was like a 3rd world country.
How did it get this way? Coal mines?

Ummm, have you met coal miners? Do you know how often they are killed? It makes perfect sense with their "I don't give a frick attitude".
Plus they were cut off from modern society for a while, and there are parts of the state where you have to drive for over an hour to get a cell signal. They aren't the most connected of people.

So much of the world's (forget just the US, though it's largely true here as well) most beautiful places are inhabited by some of the most backwards among us.

They are mountain folk who are mostly cut off from the rest of society. Oh and meth. Lots of meth.

It's still beautiful because the people are "arse backwards". When the people catch up to us enlightened folk they will fuuk up there little part of heaven too.

Baw, not meth...heroin.
Parts of Eastern Kentucky are the same way. Good folk...a lot of issues. Lack of opportunity and not easy to gain access. Plus, the government shits on them.

Any time you start thinking white nationalism might be a good idea, think about West Virginia.

West Virginia and its citizens are fine people, salt of the earth... Some view Louisiana as far worse

It's pretty simple, really.
Isolation.
It was settled by people who lived in areas almost inaccessible to the outside world for many years. Isolation bred extreme poverty, which necessitated children abandoning basic education in favor of the coal mines or homestead farms.
It's all accessible in the era of modern transportation, communication, and information, but it takes generations to change what has become the norm for a large segment of the population.
It's identical in virtually every way to eastern Kentucky, btw.

Generally speaking the majority of those that settled in Appalachia are scots-Irish and we're poor, second class citizens in Europe. They just continued the family tradition here in the US.
