Oh, I’ll never forget the day grandfather let me take the Bentley for a spin! I recall tuning the dial to a local southeastern Louisiana rhythm and blues station and hearing an amazing song. Paraphrasing, but the lyrics were akin to...
Do not choose to pursue waterfalls
Please continue along the rivers and lakes you’re accustomed to
I am aware that you shall proceed as you wish, or perhaps not quite
However I believe you are advancing too hastily

I didn't want one when I was old enough to get one. I did the driving test and such, but I had a close friend die driving and had to let those emotions go before I felt safe behind the wheel.

My oldest - a daughter- just got her license - she’s 17 - she was not enthusiastic about it at all - her eyesight is not very good so i think she is a little afraid
The next two are boys and I am waiting til the fall to put them in drivers Ed together- they can’t wait (they’re 14 & 15)

I coveted freedom and all it entailed. Learner's permit at 14.5 and license asap at 15. Rode bikes all over BR before that.

Modern cars aren’t very cool, and aren’t much fun to drive. They all look vaguely torpedo shaped, and have unhappy 4-cylinder engines.
I wonder if that’s a factor.
My other thought is cultural. It’s that scene in Jump Street where Channing Tatum discovers that no one one straps, and everyone is “super worried about the environment.”

Kids that age don't shower after gym class anymore either. My cousins kid told me that nowadays you are the weird one if you do practice good hygiene.
Only losers who don't play sports have class after gym/PE.

Teenagers in the past needed a vehicle to hang out with their friends/girlfriends. Now they just use their phones

Mine didn’t seem to care much until COVID and he couldn’t get one. Then he wanted it ASAP. Now he has a license but only drives somewhere about 2x/week.
He drove about 2 hours on the interstate (each way) recently and said he never wanted to do that again.

Well that depends on the car.

Given the choice between the latest IPAD pro or a two year old truck most teens go for the machine that doesn’t get them laid.

Kick them frickers out at 18, please and thank you. Do us all a favor!
Anyway, the parents, Memphis PD dad and stay at home mom, made the kids 18th birthdays memorable. The dad’s hobby was restoration of collectors Mustang’s. Each of the kids exchanged their house keys for car keys and were on their own.
The hot one my age married in days, the eldest who was the meh one took a few months. The middle girl who was at least a 9/10 but completely neurotic and never dated through HS I’ve posted about before.
Middle girl took a job doing the 1980’s portrait photos thing traveling by bus to setup in JC Penny stores around the country. Every couple weeks she’d be in some new place. About 9 months in that job she busses back to visit her family. Gets off the bus and introduced her husband of 3 days. Guy she met in a Tulsa mall, unemployed 20 year old former GI.
Makes me wonder if the parents continued their tradition.

Driving is overrated and expensive
There's not much more relaxing than finding miles of roads with little to no one else on them and rolling the windows down to just cruise.

My first car was a '67 Mustang FB with a 4 barrel 289 (not K code) it was a cool car in 67 and very cool car in '82 when I got it and a massively cool car now, that said a 4 year old Civic is quicker, faster, handles better and brakes MUCH better. Cool is a personal thing to an extent but the Civic will out "fun" the Mustang cool factor not withstanding.
Now something like a Revology 1st Gen Mustang is a different beast but that fun is expensive.

Their entire life they have been raised to depend on someone else for everything

I would consider my 19 year old independent...he started taking public transportation to and from school at 13. We moved to a rural area with no train and yet he still refuses to get his license. I don't get it.
