What is it about kids today not wanting to get their drivers license?

My son has a couple of friends that don't want on and my wife (no pics) has a couple of friends and their kids don't want one...WTF?
When I was younger everyone wanted their DL.

Driving is overrated and expensive

How funny.. we were having this exact conversation on Monday. Nearly everyone we know with 16-17 year old kids.. the kids have no interest in driving.
This blows my mind. I could not wait to turn 16 and be able to take my car on my own. My parents bought it when I was 15 and got my learner's permit, so I was chomping at the bit the day I turned 16.

I loved being chauffeured around back then and still do today

because we wanted to go see our friends and be seen
They do that now on insta and it is harder to constantly post when you are the one driving.
TL/DR- they can't drive and be glued to the phone screen at the same time

I'm 30.. So more like 15.
Our friend told us the other day he bought his 17 year old son a Jeep and told him all he has to do is get a part time job to pay a portion of the insurance, but the kid doesn't want to so the Jeep just hangs out at home uninsured. That's wild to me.

Nothing maybe about it. Look at car prices both new and used and the cost of insurance compared with 15-20 years ago.
It’s way too expensive.
Overrated, could be a subjective viewpoint, but with the number of distracted drivers this day and age with cell phones, yes it can be perceived as overrated.

having to get a DL to drive is racist

I didn't want it when I was in HS. Most of my friends did though.
I was just hyperfocused on computers (both for video games and genuine interest in IT) and getting a job and paying for a car and car insurance meant a whole lot of time away from my interest. I had friends who were enthusiastic about driving who never minded picking me up if I were doing something social with them.
I actually had a car for a few months while I was eligible for my license and didn't bother to get it yet
eta: in retrospect I look at this negatively though. Definitely a "failure to launch" type of thing going on that I didn't fix in my life til much later. Lots of millennials have that though I think

I was 14 one day and the next day 15 and picking up my girlfriend to go to a concert at the PMAC IN 1972.
No drivers education but was driving to the store alone since I was 12.

Just another generation of coddled titty babies that don't want to take that next step into independence.

My son just turned 17 last week and just got his license 3 months ago only bc we made him.
I had a car sitting in the driveway waiting for me the day I turned 15 and got my license. There was no learners permits back then.
You turned 15 and you started driving.
Nowadays, kids have it too easy. They get rides with older friends or they Uber everywhere. They also don’t have to leave the house for food. All that gets delivered.

So many kids today are coddled so much that driving just seems like one more task to them and they don't want to do anything that they don't have to.
A: their parents do everything for them, so why bother
B: a large majority of their socialization happens via apps, etc, so no need to get out and roam.
It's a strange generation of kids that have been babied and left to be raised by their electronics all at the same time.

Agreed. Got my license as soon as I could at 16. Had the permit at 15!

If they don't spend the $25.00 this year for their DL and invest it at a 7% return then that is an extra $1448 dollars assuming an average rate of return in the markets for 60 years
Maybe they are wiser than you.

They would rather stay home and play video games and such......

It never occurred to me that they don't want to pay for it. I never paid car insurance and neither did my kids.
