What's the future value of weekly $10 Uber rides, stupid?

My daddy used to let me drive to the store alone when I was 13 and I got my DL on my 15th bday.
Same here. I learned to drive in a 1982 Chevy S-10 with manual transmission when I was 11 years old. I was driving a 2-ton truck pulling peanut trailers to town by age 13. The local police allowed it, by the way. I recall passing my mom in the road once driving a truck to town following my dad once when I was 11 or 12, and him getting quite the earful from her! I bought a truck using money I had saved before I even turned 16. The DAY I got my license, me and 2 buddies made a road trip to basketball tournament a couple hours away! Driving was an essential part of growing up, it wasn't even really conceivable to be optional. I don't know any (able-bodied) kids that didn't drive.
My kids all have savings accounts that they are working on to purchase their own rides, but I know I'll have to supplement it. I project they'll have $5k to spend, that doesn't go far currently. They have all been driving with help on the farm, and the oldest (just turned 13) has earned more freedoms such as driving the jeep in a field by himself... but I can't fathom trusting him like we were trusted. They definitely are excited about driving.
We have a niece that didn't care and didn't get her license until it was time to go to college. I never understood it, but she is right in the zone being described. She never did any activities other than gaming or chorus. It's a totally different type of kid these days.

Yeah, the older guys just don't give a frick. Seeing Greyballs prop a foot up on the counter and start to blow-dry the old beanbag is definitely a possibility.

I guess back in the 70’s no one cared even the nerds showered and was not worried about their body.
Back in the day you showered and went to your locker to use the towel to dry off.
We never cared what people thought.

I remember at LSU orientation, a bunch of kids from out of state asking about BR public transit to the student counselors. I had never even heard anyone speak of our public transit before then.
Turns out, they all had cars but their parents didn't allow them to take them to college. Some were able to finally get them after 2 full years completed, but some weren't. That was crazy to me. How do you send your kid to a city with a crime rate like BR (especially if you just look at what is around LSU's campus) and expect them to survive on public transit or friends? Uber wasn't around yet.
Those people asking for rides got very old very fast, and they ended up spending the tail end of college basically living freshman life still in a dorm/on campus because the rest of us got sick of being their driver every time they had an errand.

My daughter turned 13 a few months back, and she's already talking about driving. She wants to take her little brothers to school, drive herself to soccer practice and to see friends, etc. I'm all for it. She'll probably end up with one of our SUVs that we have now, and I'll even pay for her gas if it gets me out of the elementary and middle school carpool hell.

Yeah, my old man wanted me to get a license so he wouldn't have to drive me anywhere and so I could get a job and see my friends and not bother him.

College I had my vehicle on campus along with other people. Crammed the people in the cars as GM had the big 4 door caprice classics, Ford LTD’s, jeeps, and mine was a 4x4 little truck with a shifter. Someone could always give someone a ride.
We use to go in the desert off road riding, drinking beer afterwards, riding dirt bikes, desert buggies, and loved the ladies sitting in the middle on the bench seat next to the shifter, ooh yeah. I am sure if they had trucks with bench seats and shifters there would be less divorces.
These kids don’t get to enjoy the good ole days and just live.
Good times where you lived life in real time not over a phone.

quote:Exactly! Make those teenagers do lawn work, trim trees, lay pine straw, pressure wash, clean trash cans and toliets, wash & vacuum vehicles, and any other random shite around the house and they'll be at the DMV waiting in line to get the hell away from home by any means necessary.
It’s too comfortable at home now.

Theres a lot more shite to do at home that kids care about these days than there was in like the 90s

but, they are robbing their children a sense of independence and coming of age which will screw up these coming generations in the long run.
These parents aren't the ones making kids do this. It's like the cool thing to do.
One couple lives within a mile of the school and the kid walks the other couple has a kid that catches a ride from a friend who drives every day.
I agree having a vehicle is a huge part of growing up and finding independence, but I don't think they can force these kids to want to drive. shite, I lost my virginity in the backseat of my car and no telling how much weed we smoked in there

The liberally biased mainstream media has taught us leaving the house is dangerous, irresponsible, and racist

I was born in 90, so I might know your kids Kidding. You'd have to be a young mom/dad for that.
Haha.... No I was an older mom. Didn’t have mine until I was 27, 29, and 32. If you graduated around 2008 you know my younger cousins. I probably know your parents. Lol

Yes, but he also has his own money. He’s had his own checking account since he was 13.
He probably has more money in his savings than most of the broke arse OT

why are you angry? I couldn't drive due to health reasons at 16. I walked or road my bike or had a friend pick me up. I was simply stating the value of those dollars in the future.
Its Friday chill out. no reason to start the weekend angry. Maybe eat some cheese dip if that will help
