Before I was married to my then wife, she called me because she took her car to her uncle's mechanic shop because her serpentine belt was squealing. He wanted to charge her $500 to change a pulley. I took it to my brother. He put on a Gates belt ($30) and it never squealed again.

$40K to remodel most of a bathroom. No measurement taken, not including cabinets or paint. fricker just walked in and said $40K. The wife and I laughed him out the house. Got it done for less than half of that.

My John Deere purchased used zturn stopped running. John Deere shop in Pensacola came and picked it up to find out why it won't run. $125 round trip, no problem. Won't do any work until we call and you authorize. Called a week later and they said "needs too many parts to warrant fixing. you're up to $2,000 in just parts needed." WTF?
1. Wire loom: what about the wire loom makes it not run? "the wire loom has been spliced. we don't know if that's the cause but we cannot work on it, must change it. Also, must have hour meter. Everything runs through the hour meter." It ran fine without it up until last week. What changed? "We don't know."
2. new motor: What's wrong with the motor? "it's not the right one." Does being the wrong motor make it quit running? What's making it not run? "Maybe the wire loom?" You know that motor has a magneto and will run if you disconnect all the wiring from it? "Not to John Deere standards. No, we don't know why it won't start."
3. replace Idler pullies and blades. Does that make it not run? "No, we're just diagnosing."
"That's be $460 please, for diagnostics."
When I argued that they wanted me to pay the rate for a pro, but were just offering a parts changer, they were offended. Also offended that I said it sounded like they wanted to do a complete restoration instead of just finding and fixing the problem. "We have to bring it back to factory specs." That's a restoration.
frick me if I ever own another John Deere product.

That should be a $3,500 job, at worst.
3500 is not a bad price for that - if there is not any demo or tear out/haul off - that is kind of a bare minimum price. Closer to 4k or 4200 should be the number including tear out/ haul off, form, place, finish, with proper reinforcement, ground stabilization, joints cut or keyway, ect.

About 20 years ago, I inquired from an online advertisement about the cost of a metal roof. Someone contacted me and insisted they come to my house. All I wanted was a price because I had absolutely no idea how much a metal roof was but they wouldn’t tell me. Someone had to come to my house to tell me.
So I agreed and this dude comes over and gives a 25 minute presentation to tell me that the roof was about $45,000.
I told him that there’s no way I was gonna pay $45,000 for a roof and I’m sorry he had to come all the way out here for that but they could’ve told me that on the phone.
He instantly got pissy with me and packed his shite up and left.
