And they always will be. Bottom feeders with a 2003 SEC West Co-Champion banner hanging in their stadium.

Correct - there is a less than 1% chance that would happen at LSU (and a couple of other places as well). Ole Miss, however, is - well, they are Ole Miss and they will always be Ole Miss. That’ll never change. It’s a place that a coach like Lane Kiffin leaves at a time like this to take a job at a place like LSU.
I mean - the plane could just be coming back to park. Although if the plan was for Lane to come tomorrow then it would likely just stay there and spend the night in Oxford. Who knows? Some people do. I don’t.
I would absolutely love that hire. I’m nothing more than a huge LSU fan but if it was me making this coaching hire right now, I would have Brohm 3rd behind Lanning and Kiffin and I would not hesitate to get him if I couldn’t get a solid commitment from either of those first 2.
I would have to consume some serious edibles to get on this like of thinking.
I get what you are saying. Don't complain about the contract and buyout that LSU just had with Kelly then demand that we hire a proven coach that would demand a similar contract (or even higher). Can't have it both ways. I am of the opinion that LSU should explore all options - don't put yourself into a box by saying that the new coach has to have this or that or whatever. Just go find the best guy regardless of what and how long his experience is. If that is a guy like Kiffin that would require a contract of that magnitude then ok. But if they decide that it is someone else from a different role, then that is ok too. Just get the best guy.
Key is at his alma mater as well. I just tend to think that those guys (Brohm and Clark Lea are in this category as well) are the toughest to pull. Dillingham in particular grew up there, met his wife at ASU - she is also from there. They now have a great life at a place that they love that has always been home to them and they are able to raise their family there. That works for some - does not work for others. But I just tend to think that in general in the coaching profession at such a high level that guys that are coaching at a place that they attended and played at are the toughest to pull away. Money does obviously play a factor but it won't be the deciding factor for a lot of those guys.
My take on Kiffin -
First - he would absolutely command not only a contract the likes of which we just had with Kelly, he would require one that exceeds that type of contract - maybe by a good bit.
Second - he has elevated that Ole Miss program in a big way. 4 years ago, he was on the list for both Florida and LSU - albeit a good way down the list. Neither school called him because they did not get that far down the list before they got "their guy". One of the reasons that he was farther down on the list was likely because he was thought of as a guy that if you made it that far down the list, he would take the job without a second thought. Fast forward to now, and he is going to have a decision to make - and that decision will not center on money, it will center on if he wants to stay at Ole Miss. That is because in that time period, he has elevated that Ole Miss program so much - to the point that it is being mentioned as on par with LSU and Florida - and that was unheard of only a couple of years ago.

I love Lanning and would love that hire. I think he would kill it at LSU. Not sure he would leave Oregon and it would obviously take a shitload of money and an insane contract to get him (same for Kiffin as well). Oregon and Ole Miss would match anything thrown at those guys.

re: Rhett Lashlee ?

He should be one of the names in the hat to explore no doubt.
yep - 100%
Anyone in that situation would do the same. LSU signed the contract - they are on the hook for that money and Kelly and his representation do have the ultimate power in deciding if that money gets reduced.

If it becomes a bidding war between Florida, PSU and LSU...

Better add Ole Miss to that bidding war as well - they will match anything and likely get last look.

He is at his alma mater - he played football there. I think he is a fantastic coach that is likely to not leave the university that he grew up next to and attended and played at.

Key
Brohm
Leipold
Fisch
Lashlee

All guys that they should do extensive research on
Terry Pegula likely paid Franklin’s buyout by himself. I’m sure he had some arrangements made with other Penn State boosters but he is capable of fronting a whole lot more than that amount without blinking.
Can't complain about the absurd contract while also complaining that a competitor is offering a more absurd contract to a top candidate. Kelly's contract is indeed absurd. So is the extension that Cignetti just signed. Kiffin's will be even more absurd weather he takes the UF job or reworks his contract with an extension at Ole Miss. After this coaching cycle, BK's contract will be less absurd than it currently is - but it is still too much to realistically buy out when you combine it with a competitive offer (plus buyout) to a top candidate.
Just wondering here but what is the return on investment for the people or entities funding all of this? The administration goes to the top say 7 boosters and ask for a commitment of 20 million each - covers the payments now and yearly along the way for the extended buyouts. What do those entities get for their 20 million? Do they get paid back with interest at some point? I know that is what an AD is supposed to do - raise funds. But at what point do the people with the money stop giving because they are getting nothing in return and the reason they are getting asked for multiple more millions is because the guy asking is the one that perpetuated the situation that they are currently in?

Defense gets way more of a pass for Omiss than for Vandy

Definitely agree there. But when the defense finally did stop Vandy forcing 2 consecutive punts in the 4th quarter down 1 score the offense threw up on itself twice for negative yardage on both ensuing drives combined.
I mean - defense performed pretty good against Lagway and Sellers. Defending QB's like those 2 along with guys like Chambliss and Pavia are way different if you have to defend them for 88 plays versus 62 plays. Offense has to hold on to the ball instead of punting it right back to said dynamic dual threat QB - especially in the 4th quarter of games.
I would definitely categorize Louisiana as part of the deep south.
