getting married to someone who did not give a shite about me.
i'm lucky she left because i was in it for the long haul. that marriage was the best thing that ever happened to me though because i learned how to set boundaries in my relationships. frankly all of my relationships (including with parents, friends, coworkers, etc.) have been better ever since i got through the divorce.

Grandfather dying when I was 16(I idolized the man), also learning at that point that all males in my family are predisposed to having a medical condition that makes are bones denser(I have NEVER broken a bone) that weakens our hearts due to extra pressure on the blood vessels.
Joining the military and being in during 9/11.
Being evaluated for sleep apnea and diagnosed with a severe case( it freaked out the nurse how quickly I met the criteria to move on to testing with the machine).
Couple the sleep apnea with the heart condition and I could actually die any time I go to sleep.
Looking at my daughters and wondering how much of their life will I be around for.

My infant daughter dying has made me much more attentive as a father to my young son.
I was always flustered and in a big hurry to have him grow up. Now that I've lost that chance with my daughter, I realized that I'd been a fool for not reveling in the moment with him.
I wish it wouldn't have taken the loss of our baby girl to "wake me up". But if there is but one positive I can mine from this brutal situation, it's that.
