What happened to flat tires?

Growing up in the 70s and 80s it seems like my dad had a flat at least 3 or 4 times a year. It was expected and we almost got excited when it happened.
Now i feel like i can count on 1 hand the number of flats I or anyone in my family has had in the last 20 years.
I guess tires are really much tougher now than they used to be.

it's possible that tires have gotten better in the past 40 years

You're upset that tire technology has advanced to the point where flats aren't common?

Roadside assistance, no one changes their own flats anymore.

It depends a lot with where you work / live. We had lots of construction in our neighborhood and I was getting flats all the damn time.

Nitrogen changed the game.

Were people still using bias ply tires back then?
quote:
A radial tire (more properly, a radial-ply tire) is a particular design of vehicular tire. In this design, the cord plies are arranged at 90 degrees to the direction of travel, or radially (from the center of the tire). Radial tire construction climbed to 100% market share in North America, following Consumer Reports finding the superiority of the radial design in 1968 and were standard by 1976.

Driving in LA means that you accept the fact you will experience one flat tire or a cracked windshield annually

The oil change places changed the game as well. Back then it was quite common for everyone to change their oil. The oil change places will do a 40 point inspection with the oil change and during that time can look for uneven wear on tires or possible damage.

Your name wouldn't happen to be Ralphie or Randy, would it?

I went about 20 years between flats due to nails, then a couple summers ago I caught 2 within about 6 weeks of each other. Totally a luck-of-the-draw type thing.

I changed 4 flats between my wife and I last March-June. My wife even picked up a nail in a tire of my mom's car she was borrowing the day hers was getting a new tire put on

Every 3 months when I get my oil changed the guys check my tires for me as well. Game changer.
I'll tell you what, there is not a worse feeling than having to change a flat tire on the side of the interstate at night. Scary as hell.

Had a contractor show up to a job site a few months ago. Got out of the truck, started talking to him and could hear a slight hissing sound coming from his trailer. Looked at one of his tires and it had about 8 deck screws in it. He took it off and brought it to the tire shop. Said the first thing the guy at the desk asked was "Who's wife did you frick?"
