What happened to air marshals being on flights?

For the past couple of years, seems every news story I read around a disruptive passenger on flight talks about how passengers and flight crew had to restrain the person with duct tape, etc.
Do we not have air marshals on flights anymore?

Air marshals aren't giving away their identity for anything other than an actual security threat. 99% of unruly passengers are not actual security threats.

They're probably still on there but don't advertise they are marshals. They dress and act like regular baws so you'd probably never know......until you do.

It’s against the Geneva Conventions.

They are the ones getting duct taped. Thanks to Brandon’s DEI hiring

I imagine air marshals are actually on a small percentage of flights. There's an absurd amount of commercial air traffic in the US every single days. Counting guys taking vacation, sleeping, etc that would take a whole lot of guys.

They're still on flights, but they don't announce their presence, until they have to.

Less than 1% of domestic flights have air marshals on board.

Yea, but some of them don’t do a very good job of hiding their weapon.
I had two board my plane once. They walked off of one plane and onto the one we were about to board, and the desk agent didn’t even look up as they walked past her and got on the plane. It wasn’t very subtle.

Even right after 9/11, it was mostly an illusion. The number of them around increased but they were never on a substantial percentage of domestic flights.

What’s the point of being an air marshal if you can’t peacock around a bit?

More flights than you think actually
Posted on 10/27/26 at 9:34 am to HoustonGumbeauxGuy
They were never on every flight. In fact, I bet they’re less than one in five flights.

There was a story about this on the radio a few weeks ago. There are not as many air marshalls as there used to be. They also are not supposed to get involved unless asked by the pilot or the incident hits certain criteria.
