Ive solved many problems over the years by going for a brisk bike ride or solo gym workouts. And, by not doing drugs and drinking.

Lost my younger brother in a really bad accident as a senior in high school. I had signed to play baseball at a D3 school after HS. My parents and other younger siblings were emotional wrecks, and I saw it as my responsibility to be the grown-up and be strong for them, so I never really got a time to grieve. I decided to go to an in-state cheaper school instead to be closer to family and my girlfriend. Ended up failing out of that school due to drinking and my suppressed grief, and had to move back home with the parents who were still in emotional shambles over losing their son. I didn't want to burden them with my pain so I used drugs for 2-3 years all while living a normal life building and cleaning pools while going to a local community college. I was fine outwardly, but inside I just wanted life to be over. One day I just realized I didn't want to live like that, and finished up at a local 4 year school. There were at least 8-10 other failures (what I see now as failures) during that time span. No matter how many times I failed, my family was there to help me get through it all. My girlfriend at the time (Now Wife, no pics) stayed by my side, even though I was a complete frick up. Still battle a good bit of anxiety, and get down still, but hell, who doesn't. I still have trouble showing my depressed feelings to anyone, but I've gotten a lot better. Now I have a great job, and I appreciate all of the shite times that I went through because, as cliche as it sounds, it made me who I am today. Bad times suck, but they don't last forever.
I guess to answer your question, Friends, family, and my SO helped me get through a pretty dark time in my life.
