How many times a day do you say goodbye?

quote:

“Goodbye” comes from the term “Godbwye” a contraction of the phrase “God be with ye”.

The foundation is that they hope you are blessed in any areas of need currently in your life.. I have found it’s usage more prominent amongst Baptist type religions but not exclusive

It means "It's time for you to leave my place of business."

Typically uttered at a convenience store counter. Sometimes a drive thru.

WHen someone says this to me, I think I am talking to a whackjob zealot.

This comes from someone who goes to mass every day.

Oh, I definitely have. I don't think it's a black/white thing at all. Some people are just more outwardly religiously faithful.

It’s on the annoyance scale but not near as bad as hearing the statement “I am so blessed”

I have a regular customer who always drops a "have a good day in Jesus" every time he leaves.

Interesting! I’ve never thought about the etymology of the word. Maybe we’ll all be saying “hablay” instead of “goodbye”

I think of it as a short hand invocation of what is called the priestly blessing or Aaron's benediction from Number 6:24-26

24 The Lord bless you, and keep you;

25 The Lord make His face shine on you,
And be gracious to you;

26 The Lord lift up His countenance on you,
And give you peace.

Basically, don't get hurt in any way, may things things you can't control fall your way, and I hope all the stress of the day skips right over you.

On a side note, there is also a hand gesture associated with the blessing picture below. If you note the gesture is made with 2 hands. Leonard Nimoy, who was Jewish, used this gesture with only one hand as the Vulcan gesture associated with the greeting "live long and prosper".

That’s a beautiful sentiment. If most people meant this when they say it, the world would be a better place.
